Vehicle Detail
If Chuck Norris were a SUV he would be a Land Cruiser. Summary: 1988 FJ62 Toyota Land Cruiser (TLC for short) 221K miles. No Rust! Automatic; Electronic Fuel Injection; power steering, brakes, windows and locks, electric mirrors. OME Suspension; New Tires; COLD AC converted to R134, Upgraded Headlights, Good Interior, Awesome Audio, Bluetooth, Average Paint, Runs Strong. New tag. If you are in TX I will renew the inspection and give you the right to acquire the personalized "FJ62" license plate. TLC is located in Houston, Texas and if you want to see it, send me a message and I will see what I can do. If you are in Austin or Dallas, Southwest can get you here and the TLC can get you back. If you are outside of Texas, well.. that is just sad.. you should think of moving here. You can ship the vehicle but you have to arrange it and its on your dime. $500 via PayPal is due within 24 hrs of auction close. Cash or cashier's check within 7 days. You will get a clear Texas title, a minimum of a 1/4 tank of gas, a warranty to the end of my driveway, and cold bottle of water for the drive home. Land Cruiser invented the term SUV but back then it meant Survival Utility Vehicle. The Backstory: I bought this 1988 TLC in April 2009 from the 4th owner with 206K miles on the odometer. It was originally purchased in Houston in 1988 from a Toyota dealership that is less than 5 miles from my house and which is still in business. From what I can tell, this TLC has spent its entire life in Houston. The original window sticker is shown below and even back then at $21,868.00, a Land Cruiser was expensive. I drove it mostly on the weekends and as you can see.. only put 15K miles on it in 3 years. 1988 was the first year for the FJ62 model which featured a number of changes for TLC, including Automatic Transmission, Electronic Fuel Injection, and Power Door Locks and Windows, Electric Mirrors. I think everything but the rear window defroster works on this TLC and since you need a window defroster in Houston once every 20 years, it hasn't been much of a problem. This is not to say that everything works ALL the time, explanations are below. Service: The TLC been serviced at Javier's Autos in Houston since I purchased it in May 2009. Javier is the guy in Houston when it comes to Land Cruisers. When I bought the vehicle Javier checked it out, and I had the Radiator replaced, fluids changed and Valve's adjusted. I can't find my receipt but about a year ago I had the power steering gear box rebuilt. Javier also installed my suspension and front and rear accessory lights. Power Windows: Like all TLC of this vintage the windows go up and down but very slowly, like they are in no hurry. The driver's window moves the best and fastest. On rainy days the rear window only come down about half way before they give up. Glass: All the glass is in good shape, no chips or cracks. Power Locks: Yes, they work.. well, not the rear passenger door, it gets power but not enough to lock/unlock with authority.. plan on it being a manual.. rear lift gate/glass lock works well. AC: COLD! Vehicle was converted to R134 and you could hang meat in this thing. Engine: They would put TLC engines in tractors but they need the tractors to go faster. If you know TLCs you are aware they are not fast vehicles, they will go down the highway at legal speed but don't think about passing that vehicle in front of you. This one gets about 11.5 mpg, the window sticker claimed 12-14 but they always lie. This engine usually starts on the first turn of the key. This morning, when I went to move it out of the driveway to get the new Yukon out, it fussed and I had to turn the key more than once and feather the petal. It does drool a little oil and/or transmission fluid now and then, I think they all do. I will take it over to Javier to have him change the oil and look it over. Transmission: It clunks when it initially goes into reverse unless you keep your foot solidly on the brake. Otherwise it seems fine. If the transmission fluid is low it will tell you by taking 3-5 seconds to kick into reverse. Owner No. 3, who works at an Auto Repair Shop on Westheimer, says he had it rebuilt when he owned it. I think it runs hot and I was planning on adding a secondary cooler to it before summer. I had Javier install a gauge but I don't think the gauge is accurate. Oh, and every once in awhile the neutral switch will act up and you have to hold the key in the on position, and, with your foot on the brake, move it from Park toward Reverse a little and it will start up; this isn't a defect, it is a security feature! Suspension: OME Deluxe Suspension - Medium installed by Javier in September 2009 along with stainless steel brake lines. It rides as good as any FJ60/62 meaning it rides like a truck, a real truck, but on the highway it is smooth and comfortable. Wheels: American Racing. Really? On a Land Cruiser? Yes. The aluminum needs to be polished but that would mean bending over and I'm not that into bending over. They were put on by the 3rd owner. If I kept it longer I bet I would end up putting black wheels and bigger tires and a cargo rack, and a snorkle (well you get the idea.. it never really ends). Tires: Falken Ziex 31x10.50x15 installed in May of 2011 at 216,270 at Discount Tire with Road Hazard warranty. These are more road tires than off road tires but I spend 98% of my time on road and only 2% off. They are quiet, ride pretty smooth and are wearing evenly. They replaced Toyo's that were hard to balance. Bumpers: Smitybilt tube bumpers and 'Nerf' bars that I had sprayed with bedliner. They have held up very well. Javier hates them but I didn't want to spend $1K for an ARB. They kinda seem to go with the late 80's look of the vehicle. Stereo: Clarion CX609 head unit with AM/FM CD with Sirius radio, Bluetooth phone and music streaming. Two Alpine amps, Infinity component speakers, an AudioControl EQ, and JL Audio W3 12" subwoofer. Yes, it is just that kick ass. If you hate music and want to save money, I will pull the EQ, Amps, and Sub out of the vehicle and cut $500 off the final selling price; however, the audio system alone is worth $1K plus. Horn: Single trumpet air horn. Switch on dash to bypass and use standard lame factory horn in the event you need to honk at old people. Headlights: TLCs normally have dim headlights; however, I installed a headlight harness by Erik Johnson and halogen bulb headlights. You can now light up the night. Don't use the high beams near old people in synthetic clothing.. it can be tragic. The aux lights went out recently, likely a fuse.. I will take it to Javier and have him fix that. Paint: I had the roof repainted in May 2010, the paint is now wearing through on the hood and needs to be repainted. The rest of the paint is average. This isn't a beauty queen, it is a daily driver and has the scratches, dings and such to show it. In my opinion it is a 20 footer.. meaning it looks really good at 20 feet but when you get close you see little things. Trim: The "chrome" is flaking off the right headlight bezel. The chrome trim on the rain gutter on back above the rear window was the victim of an automatic car wash brush. Both of these items can be fixed but were not a big issue for me.Other: It has shoulder belts in the back seat that I installed. It needs a new hood release cable which I bought and might have Javier put on. I think the engine fan runs to much and I bought a new clutch but I have not put it on, it is yours with purchase. The Scrape: Ok, I did it. I was backing out of the driveway and gently scraped the wall of the house. It is clearly shown in the picture with.. um.. the scrape. I bet some of this would buff out. Worst part was my wife saw me do it. My solution was to repaint my house to match the TLC. When Jeeps sleep at night they dream of being Land Cruisers. That is pretty much it.. Feel free to ask questions. No, I won't end the auction early. No, I won't drive it to Montana for you. No, I don't want a waterbed in partial trade. Why am I selling? I bought a 4x4 Yukon XL and yes, at night when it sleeps, it dreams of being a Toyota Land Cruiser.Vehicle is sold AS IS, WHERE IS.. it is your responsibility to check it out.. (the lawyers made me say that). P.S. The Honey Badger fears the TLC.
