Introduced in model year 1985, this new Camaro, named after the popular competition INTERNATIONAL RACE OF CHAMPIONS, was an immediate success. Whether you were a sports car enthusiast or just someone that wanted a nice looking car to cruise, the IROC-Z appealed to the masses. The Camaro IROC-Z featured an upgraded suspension with lowered springs, specially valved shocks, larger diameter sway bars, a special decal package, and an optional Tuned Port Injection system taken from the Corvette. It also shared the Corvette's 245/50ZR16 tires and new aluminum 5-spoke 16" wheels. The Camaro IROC-Z was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best List for 1985. Also new for 1985, all Camaros featured refreshed noses and new, deeper valances and front spoiler for the Z28 and the newly introduced IROC-Z28. The IROC-Z28 was capable of .92g's on the skidpad and 63.3 MPH slaloms stock. But wait, it gets even better. Fast forward two years. After extensive testing, GM found a way to wedge a 350 cubic inch, 230 horsepower, V8 Corvette power plant in to the now iconic IROC Z28. This move solidified the IROC as a true American legend. One glance at the 5.7 liter tuned port injection badges and you knew that this Camaro meant business. In addition to 5.7 liter badging, all 350 cubic inch IROC’s were built with the following mandatory equipment: automatic transmission, rear disc brakes, a 5000 yellow line and 5500 red line tach., and the bulletproof Borg Warner 9 bolt differential housing 3.27 gears. As a matter of fact, this low mile beauty stayed in the hands of her meticulous original owner until the Spring of this year. Where are the factory IROC graphics, you ask? The original owner wanted his loaded up IROC unique from all of the others. He chose to order his baby as a “stripe delete”. Yes it’s in the original RPO’s (Regular Production Options) listed in the center console. Ahh, a wolf in sheep’s clothing………… All of her needs were always attended to including eight new injectors, full air conditioning service, yes, it blows ice cold, and a brand new set of BF Goodrich performance tires.
