Vehicle Detail
For sale is a 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL. Clear title. Car is in very good shape with no rust. New fuel pump/fuel filter. New battery. The car has been stored in a climate controlled building for the past year and a half, and was regularly started. Just took it for a 10-mile drive today (12/14), and it ran fine. Engine is strong, this car can do 80 mph all day. Doesn't smoke or leak oil. Doesn't overheat, temperature stays right at 175 degrees. Cruise control works, both driver/passenger windows work, windshield wipers work, all headlights/taillights/turn signals work. Tires are good. So onto the bad: It does have a cold start issue where it takes some cranks to get it started and allow it to idle/pump the accelerator for a minute or so. The vacuum lines need to be hooked up and I am fairly certain this is the cause of the cold start problems. I have never been very good at reading those vacuum diagrams, and I'm tired of fooling with it. Once the engine is warm, this car will drive all day long. Starts just fine when engine is hot. The front passenger side trim on the fender needs to be reattached. I have the piece, but the metal strip has come out of the rubber and will need to be realigned. Driverside turnsignal lens has a crack near the top. It functions just fine and the lens can be found on ebay for $45 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=mercedes+450sl+turn+signal+lens&_sacat=See-All-Categories). Also will need a parking brake release knob. There is a ding in the center of the windshield that I just noticed looking over the vehicle. The windshield trim on the passenger side needs to be reglued. It would probably take five minutes to do, just REALLY tired of dealing with it. I do not have the hardtop. Bought it with only the soft top, and never got around to getting a hard top. The car does have 234K on the odometer, but I have a folder of over $10K of receipts on this car and several components in the engine have been rebuilt/replaced. I would probably have a tune-up done on this car. It could be used as a daily driver as is, but with cold start problem, it can get frustrating. This car has been in the family since the late '90s, and the last major tune-up on this car costs more than my inital bid. I hardly ever drive it anymore, and really would like it to go to someone who will actually use it. I have new interests now (mostly a Porsche 914 & MGB GT that I'm trying to get back on the road) so this one has to go. When the engine is warm, this car could drive across the country no problem. If you're in the area, shoot me a message and I'll be more than happy to show you the car in person. Thanks for looking and if you have any further questions, please message me.On Dec-16-11 at 12:05:20 PST, seller added the following information:I have had a few questions about the a/c working. Today I tested the blower for the a/c and defrost (maybe heat? not sure how that is wired in), and it would not turn on. The a/c did blow before being stored, so I would assume that either there is a loose connection or that the blower motor has become stuck from lack of use.
