Vehicle Detail
This is a fantastic, southern car with records literally from the day it was first delivered. It was the first owner’s pleasure to pick the car up at the factory at the authorized European Delivery Concierge program, enjoy the car, and bring it to the states. It is and always has been a U.S. spec car. The car was wisely fitted with a few exceptional options: § Grand Prix White § Black leather § 16x7 front, 16x8 rear Fuchs § Sunroof § Raised hub steering wheel § “Special order White Wheels with painted crests” § European H4 headlamps. (Incredible output) § Sport suspension § Front and rear spoilers § Power seats § “Cassette Storage System Console” with factory crest (when did you last see one of these?) I bought the car about a year ago, and immediately took it to our local Porsche dealer, and had a full engine-out service. It had some oil leaks (I know, they all do, but I hate leaks) so the car got a complete engine resealing plus a serious tune, including: § Valve adjustment § Fuel line replacement § Gaskets, O-rings § Thermo seals § Rear main seal § Hard oil line § All new injectors, correct o-rings § Freshly rebuilt ECU (If you’re looking at this vintage Carrera, you want this done; cured many issues.) § Platinum Plugs § Filters § Plug wire set (Factory Beru) § Bosch coil § Air conditioning upgraded to R134 – works great § Lots more ($7,000+ service) While it was out, I spent 3 weekends cleaning, polishing, replacing the odd nuts, washers, brackets, and whatever I could reach. Additionally, I had the front upper, lower, rear shift bushings replaced to restore that ‘tight, crisp’ feel to the gearbox. A good move. I also had the steering shaft rebuilt to get rid of the ‘wobble’, and fixed the horn. In all, the service rejuvenated the car. It’s tighter, quicker, easier to start, stop, shift and steer. Many of the cars advertised today expect the next owner to do the catch up service. This one has been done. Engine: The receipts, dating back to delivery, show the car has been supremely well-maintained. I had a compression/leak down done on the car before it was pulled and it was very healthy, within spec. After the full service, the car pulls fantastically strong in every gear, right up to the rev limiter. It is an unburstable feeling delight. Car starts easily, will idle all day long, hold temperature, and sound superbly strong through the range. Gearbox, clutch: Clutch replaced under 5k miles ago, feels wonderful. Tight, easy, no slip at all. Gearbox bushings are new, feels great up and down. Car still pulls well even in top gear. Suspension, brakes: Sport suspension is firm but compliant. One ‘cool’ day, I hear a bushing squeak in the rear, could not make it do it again. Brakes are typically Porsche: tight and confident, no pulling or binding. Wheels, tires: These optional and original rims are the ultra desirable 16s front and rear. The ‘petals’ have always been white, with painted wheel centers. Lip has been polished (obviously!) but can of course be muted with Scotchbrite as desired. The car gets tons of compliments, many about the wheels, so I left them. This is a seriously '80's' look and fits the car perfectly. Tires are Bridgestone RE750s with excellent tread all around and fewer than 4,000 miles. Exterior: White paint shines very well, has been exceptionally well-detailed (washed, clayed, Griot’s Polish 2, then machine 3, then Best of Show and finally Glaze.) There are some scratches and very few, light dimples in the paint, but its old so to be expected. Rubber has been detailed, and is very supple and deep black, contrasting well with the white. The windshield had a crack in it so instead of a repair, I had a new one put in with new factory gasket. Looks great, clear and is pit free. It’s amazing the difference brand new glass makes. Interior: Leather is fantastic. Completely soaped, dried fully, then fully soaked with Leatherique (using their ‘heated’ technique). Leather is clean, supple, rich, and comfortable. Minimal wear at driver's entry bolster. Carpet is clean throughout, as are door panels, and the uncracked dash. Headliner (optional black) and rear parcel are excellent. The interior is overall excellent. Has upgraded Blaupunkt Toronto CD, with rear speakers in factory locations, no cutting. Sounds fantastic. Car also has a Bird Automotive central arm rest with built in (slide out) cup holders. The arm rest is actually nice to have. Electricals, HVAC: Not surprisingly, everything works. Seats, sunroof, mirrors, windows, locks, fans all work great. Horn works on both tones. Gauges too. While the motor was out, I had the speedometer rebuilt (since they start getting noisy and then eat their drive gears). Had the AC upgraded to R134. Freezing cold. Heater will cook toast. Front trunk: Carpet pulled, shampooed, loose bindings rebound. The unrusty trunk floor was Simple Greened, dried, treated. Gas tank surround is clear, front stowage damage free. See photo. Accessories: Car has full tool kit, belts, jack, books, records, spare, gloves for spare changing, key for factory locks. Even the lighted key works perfectly, Porsche crest intact. The records are in chronological order, in a red 3-ring binder that starts with European Concierge documents, plus the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche confirming wheel color, spoilers and more. Overall: This car is in thoroughly original, quite amazing condition. It pops off first twist of the key, runs and drives brilliantly. It shifts, stops, and pulls just like you expect a Porsche 3.2 Carrrera to do. Sounds sublime. It has the ‘right’ options; is so ‘classically’ 80’s and correct. No funny mods, no excuses. It is tight, clean, and ready to go. I have an entire notebook filled with records, in chronological order. These cars have steadily climbed in value recently. They run reliably, look modern enough, can be daily drivers or weekend cruisers as desired. They’re safe, fun, simple, entertaining and return good fuel mileage if you care. Figuring appreciation, this is like a driveable classic you can own for free. If you consider my $7,000 expense and the untold hours spent, that’s likely a $10,000 expense you do not have to spend as you might on another ‘ok’ example with dozens of needs. I have set the reserve low for the quality. If it doesn’t sell, oh well. I was making room in my over-crowded garage, but I’ve also been hoping to justify a lift. Either way is fine. This will hopefully make someone a very fine, fully sorted 911 to enjoy for many years, driving virtually free.On Nov-20-11 at 12:36:17 PST, seller added the following information: To answer a few questions: Door dings, cosmetics: There are some very minor dimples, not even 'dings', but they would not photograph. The hood has some scratches in the paint that were impossible to photograph (I tried). So all in all, very minor. See new photos added Repair history, paintwork: I have an old receipt that shows both bumpers were painted. Doesn't say anything about parts or bodywork, so I presume cosmetic only. CarFax shows nothing, AutoCheck shows nothing. Door jambs are clean, shut lines in doors, trunk, hood all clean. Underbody area: No drips, no oil, no visible rust, no underbody damage. I about freaked when the Porsche tech put the lift support so near one of the oil lines, such is my level of obsessiveness. He just sort of looked at me. The car is clean underneath. "What is your reserve?" Not to be rude, but if I'd wanted the reserve listed, I would've done a 'buy it now'. I tend to think most of those who ask aren't going to bid, just trying to get a 'bargain'. Subtract 10 grand off the price for the work just done on this car and it would be hard not to be getting a bargain. Bid to your price and see what happens. "Will you ship to Europe?" Yes I will, but since I don't live near a port, I don't have any connections. I'll help in any way I can. "How long before I need to pick up the car?" Long as you pay for it quickly, take your time picking it up. It's inside, out of my way, not eating anything.
