70 El Camino We began this project as a shop truck for my restoration business, but after closing the shop I no longer have time to complete it. Progress stopped 2 years ago and it has been stored inside since then. The goal was to make a good running, great handling truck and a lot of money was spent in that goal. This started out as a running, driving 307/AT standard ’70 El Camino from South Carolina, that was brought up because it had a pretty good body. It has a clear OH title. I obtained a rebuilt 66 396-325 motor that had almost no miles on it, according to seller. We checked the mains and rods and found them to be clean and tight. Has good compression and we did test run the motor before installing. It has a mild hydraulic cam according to my degree wheel – around 500” lift. Inside of the motor is clean and it has been shrinkwrapped while in storage. There’s a set of vintage finned valve covers and a Performer RPM intake. (the intake has a dent in one runner – long story short previous owner smacked it with a hammer. It is cosmetic and shouldn’t affect performance). No distributor but I have a 3310 750 holley carb. There’s also a set of brand new reproduction deep groove pulleys still in the box. Radiator is a HD unit, slightly used from a donor big block car. New hi-torque mini starter from DB Electrical. Exhaust is a full 2.5” setup from Jegs with Hooker AeroChamber mufflers. Headers are like new Hooker 1-7/8 primaries. Truck was converted to 4 speed using a new reproduction clutch pedal kit, linkage and z-bar. The trans is a Super T10 with fine spline input and 2.64 first gear that we bought from a buddy that does transmissions. It was rebuilt and has a billet bearing retainer. Clutch is a new 10.5” Luk unit with stock Gm bellhousing and new fork. I have a stock-style chevelle Hurst shifter for it as well, but no linkage. Rear axle is stock 10 bolt, but I am including a 3.73 12 bolt posi from a 70 SS 396 car. It turns over freely and looks good inside. There’s a set of finned aluminum drums and billet u-joint caps, as well as Edelbrock no-hop brackets installed. Suspension was completely redone up front with SSBC drilled disc brake conversion with all new parts and braided lines. All new control arm bushings and ball joints. Hotchkiss big block 2” lowering springs, Hotchkiss 1-1/4” tubular sway bar. Tie rods and center link are brand new. Brand new power steering box. Spindles are stock height, not lowered. Power steering pump and brackets included. Rear suspension is new in the box including Hotchkiss lowering springs and rear sway bar. There may be new control arm bushings but I haven’t seen them in the parts boxes yet. Body: The truck looks fair from 10’ away, but the paint job is a quickie done by the previous owner. The truck was kind of a beater, but being from SC, there was minimal rust and the frame is excellent. Bed floor is solid with signs of maybe a small caulked up hole in the front corner. Rear window channel looks solid but there’s some filler under the paint in the corner of each roof pillar. Fenders have been stripped to bare metal, each has a prior repair which is fair enough to use as is. Rear quarters appear to have some filler in the bottoms but the backsides look good. Doors and jambs solid. Tailgate has some small holes in the bottom, and one hinge pin is broken but I have another hinge to replace it. Good ’70 bumpers. The only ‘ugly’ thing we found was that the floor pan was replaced by previous owner with a new 2 piece, full floor and its solid, but the welds and fitment aren’t pretty. Won’t be visible once installed but I’ve included pictures. Cowl is great but there’s some cosmetic rust as pictured. Windshield channel is solid. Before installing the engine and trans, the firewall and front framerails were sandblasted and painted semi-gloss black. Suspension parts were painted separately and installed. It’s a roller now and has a set of 15x7 rally wheels with older tires. Core support was stripped to bare metal and painted, as was the radiator cover. Interior has new black door panels, good glass. There’s an SS-style round dash installed and a nice blue dash pad. New heater core and fan. Heater box cover painted and ready to install. The headliner bows are all there. No seats or carpet. Other new items include shifter tunnel, sill plates and misc hardware. Grille is good, headlight bezels have been stripped and primed. All the headlight buckets, trim, etc are boxed up and included. Again, it was a complete truck when we started, so its all there. 3 Spoke comfort grip steering wheel. Used reproduction cowl hood in primer. Overall this is a great project with close to $7000 invested. Our goal was to put together a quality, fun truck, without emphasis on cosmetics, so don’t expect the beginnings of a concours restoration. Reserve is $2800. Located east of Cincinnati Ohio. Local delivery may be possible. Feel free to come out and have a look – email for contact info. I’ve tried to be very thorough with the listing and am open to questions, serious offers, etc. Thank you for your interest. For anyone interested, I have several muncies and some other intakes/carbs, and a set of smaller headers that are for sale separately. I will post more pictures as time permits. On Oct-12-11 at 20:03:51 PDT, seller added the following information: Here are more pictures.
