Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 1973 VW WestFalia CampMobileSleeps 4 with Pop-Up Camper and Cab Hammock Automatic, Air Conditioning, Ice Box, Sink, Water Pump Great Starting Point for a Restoration I’m helping a friend sell this vehicle and it’s located 20 miles from me. I have known this man for 15 years, he’s retired in his 70s and honest. Vehicle was running fine when parked in 1987 and has not been started since. Engine does turn freely. (Gentleman had a heart attack, then so much time passed that he never drove it again and it has sat for years.) Vehicle is located in Norfork, Arkansas, and has a clear title. The odometer shows 46,449 miles. (My friend thinks it 146,449). However, if he hadn’t told me the engine had been changed, I would have thought it was 46,xxx. This camper looks good for one that’s sat for 20 years. The previous owners must have all been adults. The engine was changed out before my friend got it. We’re not sure of the CCs, just that it’s what he calls a pancake motor. VW CampMobile looks like a “weathered survivor” to me. I don’t believe there’s any bondo on the vehicle, there is some surface rust, with perhaps some pin holes around it on the doors and engine lid (see photos). The camper bus seems very complete, perhaps 100% (my opinion), this is a great advantage in a restoration, because you can see where everything goes and fits. That said, it will need a fair amount of rubber and canvas replaced. The rubber around the windows is very dried out and the canvas pop up has several tears and will need to be repaired or replaced. This Westfalia conversion has some great options: · Automatic transmission. · Air conditioning. · Pop-up top with sleeper hammock. · Ice box. · Sink with water pump (pump not working). · Front cab canvas hammock. · Rear door mosquito net. · Two fold-up tables. · Nice built-in storage spaces for gear. My friend said the AC wasn’t operating when he go it and he removed the AC condenser, because it was hitting his knees, but he still has it. The front seats were changed out before my friend got it, for what reason he doesn’t know. All the glass looks good, there are 2 small chips in the front windshield. From what I’ve seen of the floor pan it looks good too (see photo where I lift the rubber mat in front). There is some rust on the “steps” on both sides of the cab, but I think the metal can be saved. In my opinion, I don’t think any sheet metal would have to be cut to replace the rust damage on this vehicle, just sand, brazing rod on some pins holes (?), skim coat and paint. (Perhaps straighten or replace the rear bumper, and the front VW emblem is cracked.) Thank you for looking and if you have any questions I will try to answer them or forward them to my friend. I’m at the limit of pictures I can have in the ad now and I hope the ones I’ve taken give you a very-good idea of this vehicle’s condition; it’s all there, but needs a complete restoration to look new. Paypal deposit for $300 due within 24 hours of auction close. Balance in cash or certified check due at pick up. Vehicle is sold as is, where is.
