Vehicle Detail
I purchased this car on 2-15-2002 from Mr. Robert Mitchell in Frankfort, Kentucky. He asked me if I wanted to see his car because he wanted me to buy it. I didn't know anything about older Mercedes, but as soon as we went for a drive, I bought the car instantly. I immediately drove the car to Indianapolis to show my uncle who owned a few Mercedes in the 60s and 70s. It drove very well on the interstate as I was cruising along at 70 mphs. I have since done studious research and learned a lot about the 220SE, 250SE and 280SE models. The reason I am selling this car is because I waited 6 years to buy Mr. Pitts' 220SE convertible and now I don't have any room for the coupe. This is what I learned about the car during the purchase process from Mr. Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was an insurance agent and insured the car since 1974 for one of his clients (a mechanic from Midway, KY told me this was Jack Hoover, a famous fighter pilot, but I cannot prove that). Mr. Mitchell bought the car in 1979. A salesman at the local Mercedes dealership told me he remembers the car coming in for service when it was owned by Mr. Hoover (possibly). The salesman said Mr. Hoover bought the car in Germany (used) and drove around Europe and imported the car to Lexington. When I bought the car Mr. Mitchell disclosed to me that the car had the wrong emblems on it. THIS CAR IS A 250SE AND NOT A 280SE 3.5 AS THE TRUNK LID EMBLEMS SAY. I asked why they weren't correct and he said that the previous owner put the 1971 emblems on it to pay a lesser import tax. To me it sounds like someone wanted to be seen in the bigger, faster 280SE 3.5 and not the 250SE. Regardless, I bought the correct 250SE emblem from Mercedes and it comes with the car. The other thing I learned is that Mr. Mitchell saved all of his maintenance records. He had the car serviced in Lexington and Louisville for various tune-ups, seal replacements and idling issues. Mr. Mitchell also had various door dings repaired and he had the sides of the car repainted. He also had the sunroof leather replaced, as well as the leather on the front two seats. I have all of the receipts and they come with the car. When I bought the car I was introduced to Gary Ensor of Silver Star Motorwerks in Winchester, Kentucky. Gary has been a Mercedes mechanic all his life and remembers Mr. Mitchell bringing the car in for service back in the 80s. I had Gary go through the car and replace anything that was worn out or not correct. The car turned out to be completely correct, but in need or motor mounts, seals, brakes, hoses, new fuses and a complete engine tune-up. I have all documented receipts from Gary. My receipts during 9 years of ownership total $4038.38. I put a new Sears Die Hard battery in the car on 6/23/2002. I also put new Goodyear Integrity tires on the car on 3/15/2003. The car is beautiful and I drive it about 10 times a year. I bought the car with 144,890 kilometers on it and now it has 173,742 for a difference of 28,852 kilometers or 17,930 miles driven in 9 years or 2000 miles per year. This car has lots of sentimental wedding value. My sister, my best friend and I all drove this car on our wedding days. I have also taken this car to the Keeneland Race Track many times. When I pulled up to the clubhouse the valets would park it in the front row next to the Rolls Royces, Maseratis and Ferraris and this car always got the bigger cheers! Here is what is wrong with the car! You can see a few dents and dings in the pictures. Mr. Mitchell had a car cover made for the car that only covers the windows. It comes with the car and when you put it on is has clips that go under the fenders and you can see that it scratched the paint 10 or 15 years ago. There is a small dent on the driver's door shown in the 2nd to last picture. A carpenter was moving our ping pong table in the garage and ran it into the driver's door and it caused the debt. There are some paint chips under the emblems on the trunk. The back seat has the original cognac or bamboo leather and it has cracked due to age. The leather decking behind the back seat that spreads out to the rear window has pulled away slightly from under the window seal. The dashboard wood is in ok shape but has a small piece missing on the far right side. Two pieces of the wood have been refinished. The wood around the instruments and under the dashboard have never been touched. The roof liner has various aging spots. The paint is about a 7. I washed this car tonight and its amazing how it sparkles. The car has water spots on certain areas, though. The car has always been garaged since I have owned it. The only time I drove this car in the rain was on my wedding day. My wish is to sell the car for a reasonable price to someone who will appreciate the historical value and semi-originality of the car. Mr. Mitchell made me promise him that I would not park the car in a Wal-Mart parking lot, that I would not change out the rims, that I would not put in a newer radio and install speakers in the back window, that I would not mess with his car in any way that made it unoriginal! I also promised him that I would always keep it garaged and not drive it in the rain. I totally messed up the last promise, but it was my wedding day! Please feel free to call me with questions: 859-351-5500. I truly enjoy owning and driving this car and want the next owner to feel the same way!
