It provided roominess, practicality and a bunch of safety features in a carlike package. Big on Safety Volvo naturally is big on safety, so the XC90 has standard anti-lock disc brakes and anti-skid and traction-control systems, along with front torso side airbags and head-protecting side-curtain airbags covering the first two seating rows. Helping keep the XC90 stable are its wide stance, low center of gravity and fairly long wheelbase. Even without the stability system, the XC90 gets good marks for steering, handling and ride with its auto platform and all-independent suspension. The brakes work well, stopping the XC90 quickly and surely. Third Seat for Kids This XC90 seats up to seven people with the third-row seat. It comes with a load-leveling rear suspension and third-row climate and audio controls. The second-row has an integrated child-booster seat for its middle area. Another option is the rear obstacle detection system to prevent a driver from accidentally backing over an object such as a child's bicycle. The XC90 has a combination liftgate/drop-down tailgate with a low opening to help allow easy loading of the large cargo area. Under the Hood This XC90 OCEAN RACE version comes with all-wheel drive and V8 engine. In the middle of the 2005 model year Volvo began offering a Yamaha-engineered normally-aspirated 311-horsepower 4.4-liter V8 in the XC90. Teamed with a six-speed automatic and a faster-reacting all-wheel-drive system, it promised to eliminate many of the problems I had with the turbocharged engines. Lots of Equipment The XC90 is loaded with equipment, which includes automatic climate control, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel and the usual array of power accessories, including a power seats. This package also contains upgrades like power sunroof, and in-dash 6-disc CD changer. Premium sound are standard on the XC90. The dashboard is nicely designed, with easily read gauges, large climate system controls and fairly large sound system controls.
