Vehicle Detail
1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible VIN: 9F94H578178 Up for sale is my 1969 Cougar XR-7 Convertible. The car starts, runs, steers, shifts, and brakes nicely. It's a fun car to drive. I'd call it a nice 10-footer. You get closer than that and you can start seeing the blemishes. The A/C blows cold, and the sequential turn signals and headlight doors work as designed (although the headlight doors will creep up if the car sits for awhile). The car has the Tilt, Swing-away steering column, which works flawlessly. The car has working cruise control, but it is aftermarket, not original to the car. You can drive and show this car now, while you make plans and save up your pennies to take it to the next level. The car was built in June 1969, making it a late model-year car. The first owner lived in the Washington DC area, and sold it in 1982 to a collector. I purchased it from him in 2003. The previous owner told me that he had the car painted in the mid-80's - and the paint is showing its age with some dull areas, chips and scratches. The odometer currently shows 56,000 and some miles. I can't state with certainty that the odometer hasn't turned over. The previous owner told me he believed the mileage was original. I think he was right. The arm rests, door panels, foot pedals, and steering wheel don't show the kind of wear you would expect with 156k miles. In fact, the chrome mylar tape around the steering wheel is still mostly there. The data plate and original Owner's Manual document the following information: Engine: 351 c.i.d. 2v (Windsor) V-8 (H-code) Transmission: FMX 3 Speed Automatic (X) Rear gear: 3.00 (non-locking) (O) Body Style: XR-7 Convertible (76B) Color: Dark Aqua Mettalic (F) Trim: Light Aqua Leather (6K) Assembly Plant: Dearborn, Michigan (F) Scheduled Build: June 6, 1969 (06F) Actual Build: June 9, 1969 (Monday) Sales District: Washington, D.C. (17) Date Sold: March 21, 1970 (Saturday) Dealer: Lee D. Butler, Inc. First Owner: Margaret Ruth Lxxxx You can see the Marti Report (and a lot more pictures) by clicking: here Here's the list of options as the car came from the factory: Optional Equipment: XR-7 package: Power steering Rim-blow steering wheel Power brakes Clock Front disk brakes Curb molding Tilt-away steering Racing mirror Whisper-aire conditioner Courtesy light group Sports console Door ajar warning light AM radio Low fuel warning light Tinted glass Door edge guards Wire wheel covers Color keyed floor mats The nemesis of old cars is rust. Unfortunately, this one has some rust in the doors and undercarriage. The worst spot is in the driver's side inner rocker panel, just forward of the seat pan. I've taken a bunch of pictures which are posted here. Things I've done to the car since I bought it include: Replaced front suspension and tie rods Replaced rear springs and shocks Replaced Rim-blow horn switch Rechromed Convertible well trim pieces Replaced heater core (ugghhh! You'll be glad you don't need to do this!) Installed Pertronix Ignitor II with correct 12v feed (electronic points replacement) Rebuilt brake booster (by Booster Dewey) Replaced spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor Cosmetic touches here and there. The car currently has a vintage, aftermarket AM/FM 8 track installed. I will include a correct AM radio with the car. There is a dent in the stainless trim at the back of convertible boot well. I will include a replacement part for that too. The dent in body next to that trim piece will need to be pulled - but that can wait until you're ready for new paint. There's still some things that need attention on the car. The top is wearing out, and has some small holes in the creases where it folds. I replaced the rear window piece. I never drive in the rain, so the top is good enough for me. If you plan to park outside, or drive in weather, you'll want to get the top replaced. Also, the burl-wood piece on top of the console is missing. I haven't got around to finding a replacement for that. As mentioned above, there is some rust in the undercarriage, and the paint is tired - but overall this is a nice looking car that is fun to drive. I've taken about 100 pictures and posted them >> here
