Vehicle Detail
Up for auction 1951 Pontiac Chieftain. Let me start by saying this is far from being a show car. The engine and transmission are solid however there are a lot of little things that need fixing. As it sits you can drive and enjoy it the way it is, its a real head turner. Lots of Chevy's, Fords, Buicks, and some Cadi's from the 50's still rollin'. Don't see a whole lot of Pontiac's. This car shows the evolution of the 40's exposed fenders in rear and 50's covered fenders in front. I will try to give as complete a picture of the car as I can so here goes. Bad Stuff: Other than the speedometer none of the dash gauges work including the fuel indicator. I purchased and will include a new fuel sender. This brings me to the next issue. The fuel tank leaks a little if you fill it to the top. Its leaking at the fuel sender gasket at top of tank. I didn't replace the sender because I was going to buy a new fuel tank since the old one is so rusty. They run about $225 however they were on back order when I called a month or so ago and I never got one. Odometer stopped working and stuck at 98,999. It was working when I bought it. I've probably driven it about 400 miles since it stopped. Tenth mile wheel still turns but I can't verify actual millage. Engine leaks a little oil. Its not pissing out, but you see some drops on the ground when you bring her in after a drive. Side windows are complete, but most of them have cracks in them and were repaired by previous owner. No radio.....Sort of. It didnt come with a radio, but I purchased a Chieftain radio (non working, but complete) and a radio repair manual which I will include. Radio not installed. Also needs antenna. Trunk latch cylinder missing. I bought one which I will include, but it will need to be re- keyed. Trunk still locks and you can open it with screwdriver No front turn signals. The wiring and holders are there. I have glass lenses, but you will need to purchase the lens holders to mount them. I will include lenses. Taillights, rear signals, headlights and wipers work. There are various small dings and pings around the car and I think most of the doors have some bondo on them although I'm no body expert. Also some interior molding and knobs missing. Good Stuff: Car runs very well. Takes a few minutes to warm up but when its ready it goes. I can't believe this thing was rated at 110 HP when it was new. Although this was the early years of automatic transmission, they got it right cause the way its geared the car drives like it has double the rated horsepower. Tranny shifts hard but this was normal for the technology of the time its fluid drive. Another thing to understand is the steering on this car isn't as tight as the cars now. There is some play in the steering wheel, however this is normal for cars of this age. I know this not only from experience with other 50's cars, but from a Classic Pontiac Parts guy who also owns a Chieftain. He said up to a quarter turn play in the steering wheel in normal for a car this old. This one is about an 1/8 turn play. Just something to keep in mind. Ties, Battery, and Starter replaced in last year. Good brakes Car was converted to 12 Volt system by previous owner. Always Garaged Car was recently painted by previous owner, but I'm not going to lie its not a great paint job. Looks good from 15 feet lol. The interior was redone recently and very clean. Car has some cool features. The Indian Head hood emblem lights up when you turn on headlights at night. (Never seen that on any car) Push button starter. Has Prism thinghy on dash. This Allows you to see traffic lights when you stop, because they will most likely be blocked by sun visor. Steering wheel crank handle, make its easy to turn with one hand. New muffler. I'm also including a Shop Manual, new reproduction of the original owner manual, a classic Pontiac parts catalog and (Original Chieftain Hubcaps These cost me $150.00) Forgot to mention the Chieftain has same body as 1951 Chevy sedan. Other than the trim many parts are interchangeable like the gas tank etc. Not hard to get parts for this car at all. I was going to put a little work into the car however loss of income and mounting home repair bills, have forced me to sell. I've sold many types of vehicles and try to disclose every issue I'm aware of. My feedback speaks for itself. If you are having vehicle shipped, I would strongly recommend U-Ship.Com. I have used them several times to ship vehicles. Its like Ebay in reverse you post an ad then people bid for your shipment in this case lowest bidder wins obviously, but you can choose whomever you want. Its free and linked to ebay so you can put in item number and they will give you a quote. Length 202 inches weight 3433 lbs. My zip code 60133. The sooner you list the more bids you will have. This site is much cheaper than most shipping company prices. PLEASE ASK ALL QUESTION BEFORE YOU BID, THERE IS NO RESERVE HOWEVER I HAVE LISTED THE STARTING PRICE OF CAR FOR FAR LESS THAN I PAID FOR IT.. MOST CARS IN THIS PRICE RANGE ARE BEING SOLD FOR PARTS. DO NOT ASK ME ABOUT TRADES OR OUTSIDE DEALS. THIS IS AN EBAY ONLY SALE. THANKS FOR LOOKING. NO TRADES!! YES I POSTED THIS AGAIN CAUSE SOMEONE DIDNT READ THE ABOVE PRINTING IN BOLD CAPS.
