Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a very presentable and fun-to-drive 1977 Fiat 124 Spider. 124 Spider (convertible) cars were produced by Fiat from 1967 to 1982, and by Pininfarina, the car’s coachbuilder for an additional three years (1983-85). It is an affordable, classic Italian sports car, which when compared feature-for-feature to any other mid-70s roadster, the 124 Spider is found to be more spacious, better handling and more affordable to maintain or improve. Fiat 124 Spiders have traditionally been under-valued against other makes, but those prices are now starting to rise due to Fiat’s return to North America. This vehicle has been owned, driven, and serviced by Midwest-Bayless Italian Auto, a parts and service specialist for Fiat and Lancia cars. While the odometer shows 87K miles, it has been fully inspected, maintained, and driven. In short, it is now ready to become someone’s reliable rag-top fun-car. The crossflow DOHC 1800cc engine runs great and has excellent performance. The chassis rides comfortably around town or on the highway. The transmission shifts smoothly. It has a very presentable exterior and interior, with a simplified engine bay. This is a reliable, mechanically sound car with a few minor cosmetic blemishes. With a little elbow grease, this car could be a show winner, or just drive the heck out of it as-is, and not not worry about the possibility of an errant shopping cart... It is a great starting point for a first-time Fiat owner, or existing Fiat enthusiast. Body The car has been previously repainted, but is in its original Rosso color (not a color change). The body is straight, and does not have collision damage. There are few exterior blemishes, mostly minor spots of chipped paint and a couple of dents, one high on the DS door and one on the trunk. It is not a victim of excessive "door dings" and is straight when looking down the sides. Paint on the hood and decklid are slightly faded, compared to the other panels, but present well. A previously repaired dent on the rear decklid has started to lift. Two minor spots on the left and right rear fender arches are the only visible bubbles on the exterior. Brightwork is all there, in good condition, bumpers are solid, all ends intact. Lights and lenses are clear. Left-side floor pan has been repaired in spots and sealed by the previous owner. Right-side floor pan is original and clean. Shock towers have been reinforced by previous owner and are solid. No issues with the cross-member pick-up points or A-frame pick-ups. Engine Original 1800cc engine DOHC engine with a rebuilt 32 ADFA mechanical carburetor, electric fuel pump, clean fuel system, and new timing belt. We have decided not to detail the engine bay so that potential buyers can get a true idea of the car’s condition. Nothing is concealed under silver or black paint. Motor runs great, starts easily every time, no smoke or knocks. Car runs at correct temperatures. Note the photo above was taken with the car runing. This car has great oil pressure, nearly 25lbs at idle. It has been fitted with a performance air cleaner and is completely de-smogged. The previous owner installed an internally regulated GM alternator and aftermarket oil pressure / temp gauges which work just fine, so we decided not to re-invent the wheel on those items. The exhaust is an Ansa sport muffler without catalytic converter. Electricals Circuits in good shape, headlights are bright, all accessories and lights work. Ignition system tune-up with new cap, rotor, points, condensors, plug-wires and plugs. Transmission / Clutch / Driveline The 5-Speed manual transmission has been completely overhauled with new synchro rings, shift forks and seals. A new clutch pack and rear main crankshaft seal was installed as well. Rear transmission mount, driveshaft, flex joint, center support and U-joints all in good condition. Rear end is fine with no issues. Steering / Suspension / Tires / Wheels / Brakes The front suspension and steering system have been completely refurbished, and is tight with no slop in the steering box or linkages. New upper and lower control arm ball joints, bushings, steering tie rod ends and drag link. Shocks are newer and firm, wheel bearings all in good condition with no noise. Rear suspension checks out good with no worn components. Period 5.5” slot-style aluminum wheels with matched Pirelli 185/70/13 tires. Brakes are firm with new rear hoses, good condition pads, calipers and rotors. Interior / Top Tan interior in good shape, no tears on the upholstery. The original dash has one tiny split, but is otherwise blemish-free. Original wood insets. Aftermarket door panels, black loop carpet and console cover. Window regulators and handles work smoothly, door seals good, and glass is clear. Vinyl convertible top is in good shape with no tears or repairs, but some age spots. Top frame articulates smoothly and latches easily. New cables. Trunk includes spare tire, jack, and battery cover. Additional photos or details are available upon request. $500 due by PayPal within 24 hours, balance due by cashier’s check within 7 days. Local pick-up is preferred, or you can arrange shipping.
