Vehicle Detail
1956 BMW R50 discovered in a basement in Duluth Mn. in 2005. Bike had a 1960 Mn. plate on it so it sat in this basement for 45 years. I know the guy who found it...he has a garbage route and was contracted to clean out the house. He traded it to the fellow I got it from, whom I also know very well. Second guy (Jim) likes to tinker...he played around with it, discovered that the magneto still had spark but was insufficient to get the bike running. He patched in a coil and battery & it started right up and ran quietly and smoothly. This was all in the last three months. He wanted me to sell it for him, changed his mind and said he'd just sell it to me. As I said, he likes to tinker, but isn't really a rider. He sort of loses interest or finds something else to occupy his free time. He hangs out in his little garage/shop without a telephone or cell phone. I bought it knowing the title was lost, and after advertising this bike on numerous occasions and on many venues, I finally took the leap, went to the DMV, picked up a one sided single sheet "lost or misplaced title' document. Got together with Jim, filled out the form, and along with 4 pictures, now have a clear title coming in the mail. Bike is in my name and I have a temporary title and a brand new Mn. license plate. Unfortunately, Mn. titles take 8-10 weeks to arrive at a person's mailbox. This should not persuade a person from buying this bike, as the temporary title is proof that the bike is sellable. Title will be promptly mailed out to the new owner when I get it. Odometer shows 16K miles and I know that this is correct. Bike was sold at a dealership in Minneapolis, Mn. and was on the road from 1956 to 1960, when it was put in storage. The dent in the right side of the tank is hard to portray accurately with a camera picture. It is a shallow crease about three inches long, and any reputable body shop should be able to straighten it out without disturbing the pinstripes. Left muffler chrome is lifting, otherwise the bike is solid, straight, and not oxidized. The seat appears to be new. There are no washer imprints in the paint on the mounting bracket. It is perfect. Some spare/extra parts shown in the one picture, a couple key blanks, extra knee pad rubber. Included but not pictured is a large three ring binder full of info/research printouts and a photocopied parts book. Bike has perfect matching engine and frame numbers, but the steer stem I.D. plate was removed somewhere along the line, so no, it is not a "three point VIN" as I have been asked more than once. Possible delivery to Iola Wisconsin Antique Car Show July 8-10 for a pre-negotiated dollar amount for help with the fuel. I have an '82 Chev pick-up for sale also listed on E-bay with the same option. Truck has 33K actual. See "other items for sale" on my Ebay page. Buy both vehicles and I'll discount total price after the auctions run their course. Another option is possible delivery in a general direction from N. Mn. to N.W. Arizona (Kingman area) in the coming weeks. I am seriously considering relocating from Mn. to a warmer climate, after the horrendous Spring season we had here and am planning a trip to a cousin's place (Chloride Az.) as a fact finding mission/long overdue vacation to look for housing/ employment opportunities. Here's all the pics I've got in my computer...some of you may have already seen some or all of these. Please disregard any dates on the pics...it is a used camera & I never bothered to fiddle with that feature. Opening price reflects my lowest asking price plus $125.00 seller fee. We can't forget our hard working underpaid Ebay staff. $500.00 non-refundable down payment via Paypal within 3 working days. Balance due upon taking delivery if bike is picked up in Duluth. Send a transporter and I'll be glad to help out the truck driver. Payment in full required if I bring bike to Iola or anywhere southwest of my driveway. Bike is 55 years old and sold as-is. 1960 Mn. license plate shown in rear view of bike not included. Thanks...
