Vehicle Detail
Starting with a 1991 Honda Accord, my goal was to build a concept car. Have you ever seen one and thought I'd love to drive something like that? Well, I started doing it, but life got in the way and it just never got finished. Now, I have another project that I need to keep all my attention on, so the Honda has to go. The rough forms - called bucks - on the car are made from foam, fiberglass, and filler. They're supposed to be smoothed out, and then molds pulled from them to produce the real body parts - which get bonded on, bolted on, and painted. The bucks were made strong enough for the car to be used as a daily driver - which I have done for the past five years - while the work was being done. It's very strong, but also pretty heavy. The motor still runs like new. The oil has been changed religiously every 3,000 miles, and comes out nearly as clean as it goes in. There is a pinhole leak in the oil pan, but it has never been run low on oil. It has a new radiator, clutch slave cylinder, starter, and battery in the last year. The front upper control arms were replaced a couple years ago. Both CV axles, and the clutch, were replaced within the last five years - all are in good shape. It was lowered by cutting the springs, and needs new struts and springs. If you keep it lowered, it should have a camber kit up front. Needs oil pan or patch, exhaust system, outer tie rod (squeaks, but no play in it), at least one caliper (brakes dragging), rotors (warped), rear brakes, heater valve, IAC, and windshield (crack on passenger side). The car is a little noisy but can be driven as it is. I was using it for my daily commute until March of this year, when I purchased another car. The gas filler is behind the rear plate, and opens with the trunk release lever (inside the car). There is no trunk lid - you get it in from the folding rear seat back. It has a pretty strong (class 3) tow hitch, that I used to pull a small utility trailer. It has also pulled U-haul trailers from the smallest open model, to a 5x9 box, without problems. The factory rear window is under the rear buck. I was going to put a Chevy HHR rear glass in it eventually - which is about the size of the opening in the pic, has a factory privacy tint, and defroster. The taillights are the original Accord lights, cut down, flipped 90-degrees, and mounted in custom fiberglass buckets. They bolt in from inside the trunk. More work was done since these pics were taken. The front marker lights were filled, front fascia shaped more, rear quarters shaped more... As mentioned, I intended to throw all this stuff away, after I finished the shapes, pulled molds, and made the new parts. If you just want to have fun with it, you can smooth it out, throw a new coat of black primer on it, and drive it. I've been stopped by local police and (Ohio) highway patrol, and they never gave me a hard time about the bodywork - just warnings/notices for traffic violations or a bulb burned out, etc. They asked a lot of questions about how I did it - you'll get that a LOT! You'd better lke attention... :) I will try to add more pics. As far as the reserve goes: I'm not one of those guys who thinks his junk is worth more than gold - I'm just not dumb enough to sell it for less than I can get for selling a few of the better parts separately, and scrapping the rest of the car. If there are promising bids, I'll consider dropping the reserve below the current highest bid, and letting nature take its course. On Jun-17-11 at 07:22:31 PDT, seller added the following information: I added a few more shots of the interior. It's okay for the mileage on the car, nothing special, but it's pretty much all there and not too dirty. The key switch and (separate) starter button are located on the aluminum panel in the center of the dash. The stereo is NOT included with the car in this auction, but if you want it we can deal. It's just a cheap Sony AM/FM/CD, but is going in my daily driver, unless you want it. The steering wheel is a Grant with a carbon fiber cover I made There's a rear cover that's not installed in the pic, that goes with it. I never got around to putting the carbon fiber on it (thin fiberglass shell right now). The shift knob was truned, by me, from 6061 billet. I also modified the shifter for a short throw - about 3" from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th - feels really nice. The console is fiberglass and was based on the factory console. I wanted cup holders. It needs smoothed out and painted or covered, and bolted down (just needs four holes drilled, that I never did...) More pics of the exterior coming... On Jun-20-11 at 10:05:51 PDT, seller added the following information: More pics, as promised. I filled the corner marker lights and did some surfacing (shaping) work on the front fascia. As you can see the front fascia is now bonded into the fenders. My intention was to make a one-piece wrap-around front clip. Again, the process was to be finish this plug, pull a mold, and make a new bolt-on composite front clip. The right fender needs be aligned, which is one of the reasons I stopped working on the front clip. Right now you can separate it with a utility knife, reposition it, and re-glass it into the front fascia, then continue the surfacing work. The vented hood works really well. The hot air from the radiator goes right up and out of the vent, instead of back towards the motor. It almost needs some kind of door in the winter because it takes the motor quite a while to come up to temperature. The interior heats still work fast though. I was going to finish the hood buck, pull a mold, make a new hood. There is supposed to be a screen in the vent opening. In back, I did more surfacing work, but never got around to smoothing it out. I used polyurethane foam to add more curves and body lines, then went over it with a polyester resin based filler/sealer material I make. From here body filler is used to fine-tune the shape. The body line under the windows is supposed to pull down towards the back, and bulge out over the rear wheel openings. I made door panels which pull this wide-body effect into the rear doors but never got around to trimming them and working them into the car. The front sections of the rear wheel flares were on the doors, and were to be attached to the new door panels. You can go either way with this, continue what I was doing or go back to the former look. NOTE! In the last auction, I forgot to lower the reserve before I went to work that morning, and couldn't do it from my cell while at work. I actually lowered it on my break, to a dollar over the highest bid ($465), but there weren't any new bids. The reserve is now set at $450 - the amount I can get for a few parts sold individually and scrapping the rest of the car, plus the fees I have to pay Ebay. I'll decide whether or not to go lower based on the pace of this auction. And, in the interest of full disclosure: Something I had completely forgotten about, until someone here asked whether the plugs could be removed, to restore the car to its original form. What started this whole project was the rear quarter panels were bent. It happened with the previous owner, and I don't remember exactly how. The frame is NOT bent, and the car goes down the road straight and smooth (other than when the brakes drag on the warped rotors). The previous owner was driving the car daily, and I have used it as a daily driver for the past eleven years. I clipped the rear third or so of each bent quarter panel to do this project, less than would be cut off to replace them with recyled parts. The trunk lid is buried in there, but might not be worth saving. It wasn't bent originally, but I did some "work" on it in a previous version of this project that had the original trunk lid working and visible.
