Vehicle Detail
1983 VW Scirocco DIESEL This is a real nice rust free Scirocco, Mars Red in color (which is kind of an Orange-Red), with black leather interior. The Scirocco was pretty much the same chassis as the Volkswagen Rabbit, although it was not offered here in a diesel form. I had to build it for myself. I have done VW salvage for 18 years, and run a VW service shop, so I’m very well schooled on these cars. The body is real nice and appears to have not ever been wrecked. The paint is faded and thin in spots, but still retains a sheen when washed and detailed as I had it in the pics. It's faded back again, but will wax back out presentable. The black of the bumpers look nice when you detail them, but will fade to grey when dry. I would reccomend to dye them. I put some diesel emblems on the car from a MK2 Golf. Wheels are 14” 1997 Jetta GT rims with good tires, just balanced. It has a real neat set of aluminum louvers on the rear, which are awesome. Some of my pics will show the car when it had some 195s on it. The tire size now is 185/60/14, which is the factory size. I put in an excellent running 1986 Jetta 1.6 n/a diesel engine. This engine has the hydraulic lifters, so no valve adjustment will ever be needed. Before installing, the head gasket, head bolts, valve stem seals, valve cover gasket, all front oil seals and the rear engine oil seal was replaced. So was the timing belt kit, drive belts, water pump, thermostat. The alternator was rebuilt. The fuel lines on the car were reworked and an 86 Jetta fuel filter assembly was installed. The transparent fuel feed line was replaced with a new one. The glow plug wiring circuit was added and looks as factory with the glow plug indicator located in the cluster. The choke cable for the injection pump looks as stock. The tachometer in the cluster does not work, as it is calibrated for a gas engine. There is a converter box that you can buy to make it function. The diesel tach would run off of certain alternators. I did put that style alternator on the car. The speedometer does not read correctly. It actually reads as though you are going much faster than you are. Thus, I do not know the actual mileage on the body. I listed it as 200,000. The odometer says 300,000+ which I think is cool, but who knows! I have an extra speedometer for the car. The transmission is a correct 86 Jetta diesel code transmission. The shifter was rebuilt. New clutch cable. Front brakes are new. I have never charged the a/c system, although I have electronically tested the system and it works well and cuts on the radiator fan and the compressor. I have the compressor unplugged since it is not charged. As far as the interior goes, it is the original black leather interior. Door panels are still in pretty nice shape. The car has manual window, which are a plus since the Scirocco power windows were very problematic. Electrically, everything works. The heater / ac blower works well on all speeds. No problems with any lights or signals, etc. The 83 was the first year of the plastic fuses, a real improvement over the ceramic fuses and that fuse panel. It does have the mono wiper assembly on the front windshield. The radio works, but the CD player does not. An interesting note is that I have the original window sticker, owner’s manual and warrantee card for this car. There are also various receipts from over the years. This car is very reliable, and still sporty to drive. It always cranks right up, and the water temp stays steady in the middle range. It’s very comfortable. I’m 6’0. There is plenty of legroom and headroom, way more than my Rabbit pickup! When in 5th gear, it really turns low RPMs. It handles very well. I drive some curvy roads at times, and it hangs right in there! I am not one for determining mileage, but it will be at the highest end of the spectrum for a Rabbit diesels. Mostly due to the fact that the motor is tight and it has the absolute correct gear set in the transmission which is critical. I have gone on to build another vehicle, so time for something to go. I kinda hate to sell this one, but I have too many cars to cover on insurance, as well as too few parking places!!! Please note, this is a 28 year old car! It does have a few rattles and such that perhaps I’m very accustomed to and may fail to mention! As most vintage VW diesels for example, the dash and steering wheel vibrate at idle when cold, no very much when warm though. The front leather seats have wear, and the dash is cracked, typical of this vintage. The headliner is overall good, but has a few imperfections. The door panels are nice, but a few minor blems. The rear view mirror is not on the car, needs to be glued back on. I don’t use it, so I never got around to it. I drive my cars, not show them, so a detail would be in order, as well as an air freshner and detailing. I built a pretty darn good car, and did it right. I will be taking it to the alignment shop on Monday to align before it’s sold, so that will be fresh. A $500 non-refundable deposit via Paypal will be expected within 24 hours of the auction ending. Payment of the balance will be cash. Any questions should be asked prior to bidding. I have stated everything to the best of my knowledge. I may have left something out, who knows. I hope not.
