Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1938 Pontiac Chieftan 4 door with 11,800 original miles. The car has a in line six cylinder motor that runs great. This car is in great shape and has always been garage kept. It is all original except for a few gaskets seals rubber pieces where the bumper mounts go through the body and the car was repainted in 1984. There is a very small surface rust spot on one of the front fenders. My father purchased this car over ten years ago and he purchased it from a man who inherited it from his aunt who bought the car new so it has only had three owners. This car has been in at least two movies including The Notebook which was filmed right here in Charleston SC. The movie company offered to buy the car but it was not for sale at that time. The interior is the original tan molehair fabric and in good shape. If you would like more information send me a message and I will reply with a phone number or answer your questions. Thanks for looking at my auction and good luck.On Mar-22-11 at 20:16:00 PDT, seller added the following information: Some new info since I have had so many questions and interest. The specific model is a 1938 Pontiac Chieftan Silver Streak. The silver streak refers to the large chrome strip that runs up the center of the grill and over the center of the hood and up the center of the trunk. I tried to take a new pic of the rust spot on the right front fender and it is so small it wont even show up in the digital pic. I kind of mistated it as surface rust it is actually two small bubbles under the paint about the size of a pencil eraser and has not gotten any larger or changed its appearance in the ten years that we have owned the car and after looking at it closely it might have been a moisture bubble when the car was repainted in 1984. It really doesnt look like rust at all after closer inspection. The running boards are original and not in perfect condition but very acceptable. I have the original banjo steering wheel but put a regular steering wheel ( correct style and year just the plain style) on it because it is in better shape. The original banjo wheel needs to be reconditioned as the material is brittle from age and broken with pieces falling off. I have a extra running gear, motor, transmission, drive shaft, and a original heater kit that I will make you a deal on if you win the auction. I have paperwork that was in the glove compartment from when the original owner had the car. I have pictures of the car being repainted in 1984 showing how they stripped it down and painted it proffessionally all the fender welting between the body and fenders was replaced at this time. I have posted new pictures showing the engine compartment. I hope this new information helps and please do not hesitate to message me with any question you may have about the car. Thanks again and good luck.On Mar-26-11 at 16:03:20 PDT, seller added the following information: I just thought of a few more items included in the auction. The original spare tire as well as the original jack and lug wrench are in the trunk and in great shape. 5 or 6 1950's New York liscense plates from the car are included along with some old New York maps that were in the glove compartment. A reproduction of the original body manual and a reproduction service manual specific to the 1937 - 1938 Pontaic. Also included a dealer brochure for the 1938 Pontiac showing options and pictures. I do not know if it is a original or a reproduction but in great shape. Thanks again and good luck bidding. On Mar-27-11 at 14:29:32 PDT, seller added the following information: I received a request to post more pictures of the interior so I went out today and started snapping photos of the headliner and seats. The rear seat had a cover on it and it has been on there ever since we have owned the car. I took the cover off and to my surprise there was some wear from old age where the top and bottom cushions come together. I took pictures of this and posted them. I want to be 100 percent honest with everyone on the condition of this car thats why I keep adding posts and pictures to the description. I have seen the reproduction fabric for the seats in one of the catalogs I have and it is relatively inexpensive and this is a very basic factory seatcover so I feel like it would be a fairly inexpensive repair. Also see in the new pictures the wear on the armrests again covered in this same fabric. I think I have covered everything now and this should be my last update on the auction.
