1962 Studebaker Lark 2 door sedan Rebuilt OHV six cylinder, NOS overdrive transmission, low miles. As some of you may know, I find nice Studebakers around the country and fix them up and find new homes for them on ebay. I bought this nice example as part of a four car Studebaker collection from a friend in L.A. California and had it trucked to a another friends shop in Woodland Ca. to prep for ebay. The little 2 and 4 door Lark sedans were by far the best sellers for Studebaker, but you might not guess that at your typical Studebaker show. You're more likely to see the flashy, and more collectable models like finned Hawks and Avanti's than the more commonly sold sedans. For many years, the sedans, especially the 4 doors were only considered "drivers" and not commonly treated to a high dollar restoration. The logic was that you should not spend 10K or more on restoring the less collectable models, so you just drove the wheels off a sedan. Recently, the high market prices for the very collectable Studebakers have put them out of reach for many and a market has grown for sedans that were still pampered and loved in spite of their more reasonable value. This is just such a car, other than a repaint and mechanical rebuilds it's pretty much as built in 1962. The previous owner cared enough to spend a lot of money on a full drive line rebuild and a upgrade to a brand new, old stock, overdrive transmission. Of course, two doors like this have also caught the attention of the rodders that add a big engine, do some customizing and end up with something a bit more unusual than the run of the mill Ford or Chevy at a rod show. The rust free body on this car is typical of California cars with only some surface rust here and there. The car has no major dents or scrapes, and the chrome looks great. The car sports 14 inch 1958 Studebaker wheels and hub caps which lower the car one inch over the stock 15 inch. The previous owner also installed a AM/FM CD player for his commuting pleasure. The repaint is presentable, but certainly not show quality and there are some chips and surface rust down low on the rocker panels and one front fender. As you can see, the factory upholstery is torn on the drivers side back rest and the carpets are a bit faded, but overall the interior is pretty nice for a driver. Studebaker seat belts are installed and in good shape as is the headliner and door panels. The engine has barely been broken in from a full, professional rebuild. The previous owner bought and installed a brand new overdrive transmission with the driveline rebuild. The little 169 cu.in. six delivers 24 MPG or better fuel economy, but will still comfortably run freeway speeds all day. The rebuilt engine and overdrive transmission and other work done by the previous owner probably cost the owner more than our reserve price, but his loss is your gain. Like the body, the trunk shows none of the all too commonly rust fpund on cars exposed to winter salt and still sports the spare tire, jack and trunk mat. Here is my friends comments after working on and driving this car. "I just took this little cutie out for a spin. The overhead valve 6 cylinder engine is rebuilt and the transmission is a brand new, old stock, 3 speed overdrive. The engine runs fine with what sounds like a bit of tappet noise at the lower rpms but was quiet and smooth at speed. The rocker arms probably need an adjustment. The car shifted nicely and when the overdrive was engaged, it acted as it should. It even kicks out of overdrive when the gas is pushed down firmly for passing. As one would expect, this car has a few squeaks here and there, but it rides well down the road. As far as cosmetics go, this one is a good looking car. The glass is all good and the windows all roll up and down properly. The paint is not perfect, but is a solid 10 footer. The interior looks very nice in spite of the tear in the front seat. The headliner is very good and the carpets look recent. The door panels have some wrinkling, but are complete and fit in with the rest of the car. This is a perfect car for someone looking for an inexpensive way to enjoy the Old Car Hobby and Studebakers in general." Studebaker collectors would call this car a nice driver. It's a nice running, good looking little Lark you could drive for pleasure, or show up at club meets or shows. As she sits, it's not a car to use to collect plastic car show trophies, but nice enough to enjoy and drive with pride. I think it's a perfect, entry level collector car that you can enjoy without fear of messing up a 10K paint job and perhaps resell later with a bit of a profit. Of course, if you are a rodder, this solid example is a perfect start to build a very nice rod on a budget. My reserve is well under even the NADA low book value, and quite a bargain considering the money spent recently on the drive line.
