Vehicle Detail
1964 Studebaker Cruiser 289 cu.in. V8, Power Disk Brakes, Power Steering 91,687 miles Be sure and follow the more pictures link at listing bottom. As some of you may know, I find nice Studebakers around the country, fix them up and find new homes for them on Ebay. I originally found this Survivor about 10 years ago. At the time, I probably paid a record price for a 64 Cruiser because I was just that impressed with it's condition. After owning it a short time, another Studebaker Driver's Club member just had to have her and and I thought she was gone forever. I was pleased to find her and buy her back with a collection of other Studebakers from Los Angeles Ca. I had all the of the collection hauled to a friends house near Sacramento to prep for ebay. BTW, very little work was needed since the car was just as I had found it back it the 90's. It had been only driven occasionally, and stored in a climate controlled warehouse with his other collector cars. The 1964 Studebaker Cruiser was built on the former long wheelbase Lark chassis, but in 1964 the Lark name was dropped and it was simply a Studebaker Cruiser. It was the first "luxury" compact, often referred too as limousette with it's fancier exterior and interior appointments. 1964 was the most refined Cruiser, and the last model with the South Bend, Indiana built Studebaker 289 cu.in. V8. The Studebaker line continued for two more years in Canada, but with a Chevy engine. This car is a true Survivor, never restored, never modified. Most every nut, bolt and clip was last touched on the line in late 1963. The only things on the car that are not factory are things like tires, belts and normal maintenance items. The paint, the cloth/vinyl interior and the rest are all original. All original cars are rare, original cars in this condition, rarer still. It's far easier to tell you about the few minor flaws in a otherwise stunning car than to list what's very nice. The car has one, small rust area down low on just one fender .(passenger front) It's hard to see, and could be easily fixed and the paint touched up. (See pictures at the "More pictures link".) It was there 10 years ago, and is not any worse today. We chose not fix it, because we wanted to keep the car a Survivor, nor make look like we might have touched up something much worse. The steering wheel has some paint wear, and there are other minor aging issues like the inside door trim windlace. This is just a honest car that looks pretty much like it did when it was built. No new paint covering who know what, just the factory paint with very minor chips here and there. What you see, is what you get, no surprises. The car looks like it is perhaps 3-4 years old, not over 45. You could spend well over $3000 to do a interior like this and it would still not be perfectly correct since the cloth material is long gone. The dash pad has a tiny crack, and the windlace around the inside of the doors has age hardened, but is a easy replacement. There is a small tear in the rear seat that can't be seen in the pictures, but again, a easy fix. If I were to keep the car, I'd probably replace the windlace, touch up the one rust spot, maybe repaint the white on the steering wheel and call it done. The car does not need a restoration, and the less done the better since they can only be a original survivor once, and very little needs attention anyway. There is no rust through noted in the floors or trunk. Here's my friends impression of the car after driving and working on her. "This Cruiser is like stepping into a time machine. The original interior and paint on this car will absolutely send you back to 1964. Set the radio dial to the oldies and you'll be hangin' with the Fonz and cruisin' with Milner. This Cruiser is a delight to drive. While it cannot be said that it drives like a new car, it feels as though you are driving down the road sitting on your living room sofa. The upholstery is just that comfortable. The ride in this car is buttery smooth and compared to modern cars... soft. It starts effortlessly and shifts smoothly. When using the first gear start, the acceleration is exceptional. The 289 shows off its 300 foot pounds of torque quite well here. As you can see it the pictures, the gages work as they should and the clock works occasionally. I believe the clock should be repaired as it adds a lot of character to the dash. The lights work, as does the horn and all the other switches. The doors open and close with a solid feel of a lightly used car. The windows crank up and down with ease and all the glass is good. If you are looking for an original, unrestored car, this is one to consider. Great looks, comfortable ride, V8 power and driving pleasure for your passengers." Since the car was purchased back from a friend as part of package at a below market price, my reserve is under even average book, and this car is in way above average shape.
