Factory Borani wheels!... 1974 Maserati Indy America Chassis No. AM116/47 1520 Engine: 4.7 Litre overhead cam V8 Named to celebrate Maserati's two victories at the Indy 500, the Maserati Indy first appeared in 1968, at the Salone dell'automobile di Torino as a prototype by Carrozzeria Vignale that was to replace the ageing Mexico and Quattroporte. Despite a certain visual similarity with the Maserati Ghibli, the Maserati Indy had nothing in common with it and only a few shared elements, namely hidden headlamps, a high-tailed fastback roofline, and flowing lower-body contours. Aside from standing five inches taller, it differed in having token “ + 2” seating, more prominent B-posts, longer rear quarter windows, and a lift-up rear hatch for cargo-hold access. Changes during the Maserati Indy’s relatively brief, five-year life consisted mainly of upgraded V-8s that were borrowed from the Ghibli: the 290-bhp 4.7, offered beginning in 1970, and the 335-bhp 4.9 from 1973. Some might call this confusing the issue, but Maserati likely viewed it as offering its customers the widest possible choice. In 1971, two new versions of the Indy were introduced, destined for the North American market and were renamed the Indy America. The Maserati Indy was one of the last in a long line of traditional front-engined rear wheel drive Maseratis powered by a classic, normally aspirated, four overhead camshaft, V8 engine. AM116/47 1520: Offered here is an excellent driver’s example of the desirable Indy America. One of only 364 4.7 liter cars produced, this numbers-matching Maserati is surly a great find. This respectable driver appears to have been treated to a ground up restoration some time ago. Finished in the original red hue. Both the undercarriage and engine bay are very honest and presentable. The beige interior upholstery remains in good condition, as does the wood steering wheel and shift knob. The beautiful carpeting and leather show no rips, tears, or stains; although the original center console does display slight signs of age. An aftermarket Aiwa CD player has been installed. The Indy is a dream to drive! With reliable start ups, smooth idling, strong pulls and tight tracking, this Maserati certainly lives up to its respected name.
