Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is our pride and joy - 1956 Mercedes-Benz 219 with factory WEBASTO SUNROOF! If you are seriously interested please read the entire description below. I have tried to be as honest as I can with the history and current condition of this car. I sincerely want all bidders to know exactly what they are bidding on. There are quite a few pictures following the description and please contact me if you need any further information or additional pictures. Thanks for checking out our auction! auction!! This is a 1956 Mercedes Benz 219 4 door sedan also known as a ‘ponton’. It does have a 220s tag on the back but based on my internet research it is surely a 219. It seems the 219 was a more economical model than the 220s but also much rarer because of much lower production numbers. Combined with the factory Webasto moon roof and condition of the body it is surely to be a hard to find desirable collectable. This car is all original with the original inline 6 cylinder engine with a 4 speed shifter on the column. I do not know much about these cars….only what I have read. I hope my facts are straight. I have also found parts to be available online. HISTORY: I purchased this car as a fun fixer upper last year and have been working on it off/on since. When we bought it the car had been sitting indoors in a garage under cover for 6 years. I purchased it from the second owner’s son. His dad had passed away and the car had been sitting in the garage since 2004. The man we purchased it from stated the car was driven into the garage at that time and was running great and was a daily driver for his dad. He said it was purchased by his father sometime in the 1990’s from the original owner. It was repainted just before he purchased it around 1988. I was told the car is an original Colorado car purchased in the Denver area. I was given the clear Colorado title, keys and some additional papers on the car. I trailered it home and started working on it here and there over the past year. Below is a list of more recent work: - When I purchased it the car had a relatively new master cylinder installed. The front rubber brakes lines were leaking a little and they were replaced and the brakes bled. The rear lines are original but are not leaking. I will include the new rear lines that came with the set I ordered. The brakes work great and there are absolutely NO LEAKS in the system. - The gas tank was flushed/cleaned as were all the gas lines. The fuel system operates off the original tank, lines, fuel pump and there are NO LEAKS. Fuel sending unit and gauge work correctly. - I had to do some light repair on the passenger cardboard heater box which now looks much better and is sealed up. The driver’s side box is in great condition. Not sure really if the heater is functional but everything is there. - I cleaned and repainted the rims which look great. - I had a clean matching set of used Michelin tires put on the car – they do show slight dry cracking but have great tread, are nearly the correct size and are all matching. - I did fluid changes of the antifreeze and engine oil, as well as cleaned the points/rotor/cap, new plugs and wires. I put a new air filter in it and roughly cleaned the carburetors while still on the car. The entire cooling system is original, works great and has NO LEAKS. There does appear to be a small oil leak at the rear main of the engine but it seems to be leaking less and less as I put a few miles on it. That is the ONLY leak underneath the car. 1-2 drops after being driven. - Put a battery in it. MECHANICAL: This little MBZ then started right up. It ran clean and purred nicely. This early winter the car is now smoking a bit on start up but honestly I think it might just be the cold. It clears up quickly once warm and does not smoke while driving. Since it didn’t smoke in the summer I think it must be the cold weather. The engine revs up clean and runs very well. It does idle a little rough – it could surely use a professional tune and probably the carburetors rebuilt. I did perform a compression test when I purchased it and all cylinders were within spec. I have driven it approx 100 miles since finishing all of the above. The oil has remained clean. The car drives very nice and feels vintage. The clutch is smooth as is the shifting. The rear end sounds good and all the electrical works as it should (with the exception of the turn signals?? which don’t work and temperature gauge.) Oil pressure appears to be great according to the gauge. Headlights/brake/reverse lights work as they should. As stated above the brakes work great! The car is very solid without rattles and is not noisy over bumps. Steering is tight and the car tracks straight ahead. This car is nearly ready to go. With a little TLC/tune up it will be a great weekend cruiser. INTERIOR: The interior is in great shape with clean seats, carpet, door panels and dash. All the trim around the windows is intact but does show its age a bit. It has the original Becker Monte Carlo stereo which turns on but does not produce sound. The clock is intact but does not work. All the gauges work as they should other than the temperature gauge. The original steering wheel is intact but does have numerous cracks – nothing loose. Horn works fine. The headliner is intact without tearing or major stains. The Webasto sunroof works as it should/latches and is such a cool factory option!! All glass appears to be original with all windows working great other than the passenger rear window which will not roll down. There is a small crack in the windshield along the passenger lower corner. Wipers and interior lights work great. I do have the keys for the ignition, trunk and gas door…do not have the key for the driver’s door (or its not working??). The pull switch you can see under the dash is for the washer fluid motor which has been switched out for the original. (I do have the original included) EXTERIOR: This car is very solid and I will be as detailed as I can be on the condition of the body. The chocolate brown paint looks good but the clear coat is coming off in spots. There are some chips/scratches here/there with localized surface rust. The exterior is all original other than the license plate lights and mounting plate. The trunk is clean with no signs of rust. I did wire wheel the floor, treated it with primer and painted it flat black. It does have the original spare, jack and lug wrench. The floor mats in the trunk are original as well. The floorboards of the car appear solid and there is no sign of major rust on the bottom of the pan of the car. Rear suspension pivot points are rust free as are spring locations under the body front and rear. Both rear fenders appear to be rust free, dent free and bondo free. As for the rear doors, the front bottom of the passenger REAR door there is some rust visible with bubbling paint and an area approx 2 inches long. On the drivers REAR door there is an area along the bottom which does have some bondo in it. It was painted flat black when I got the car and I painted it flat brown. I did run a magnet over the rest of the outside of the car and did not find any other filler. I’m sure there are small spots here/there the magnet isn’t picking up but overall it is very straight. The rocker panels and door hinge posts are straight and rust free. The front doors are also straight and rust free. The front fenders and hood are straight and rust free. There is a sign of rust approximately the size of a quarter at the very back of both front fender wells and one smaller spot near the back of the car. The engine compartment appears to be rust free. The roof and Webasto sunroof is all intact with ok material and NO RUST. The bumpers have some small dings here/there. Looks like someone put the front bumperettes on the rear and the rears ones in the trunk??(included but dented) The driver side rear bumper bracket is broke and will need a weld. All exterior chrome is original and intact – the grill is VERY nice. I think that is about it – please contact me with any other questions, or if you would like any additional pictures/video. We have NOT registered the car in our name. We have been mostly fixing it up so spared the expense. The car will be sold with a clear Colorado title signed (not dated) by the gentleman I purchased it from, the keys and the box of extra parts in the truck. Please do not bid unless you are comfortable with this. The vehicle is sold in AS-IS condition with NO warranty implied. Please see attached pictures of paperwork to be provided. So it goes….we are now forced to part with beloved Mercedes Benz. We have some medical bills to pay off and our toy must move on for us to do this. This car is a great collector piece and sure to rise in value over the coming years. The car will be 55 years old this coming year!!!! NADA values for classic car are listed below. I have the opening bid at less than 1/3 of average retail value - NO RESERVE!! And they do not take into account the WEBASTO sunroof which definitely raises this cars value!! http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1956&m=1115&d=4160&c=7&vi=76337&z=80526&da=1 I can help coordinate with a shipper but it is up to the buyer to arrange everything and pay all expenses. I’m in Fort Collins Colorado which is one hour north of Denver. This car could easily be driven short distances but really should have a tune up/professional once-over before hitting the highway. I have had the car up to 80 km/h and it ran great but wouldn’t recommend long distances until it’s checked out. Please contact me through ebay if you have any other questions or need additional pictures etc. PLEASE contact me if you have under 5 transactions or under 90% feedback through ebay before bidding...otherwise your bid will be cancelled. This car will be sold to the highest SERIOUS bidder. Happy Bidding and thanks for checking out our auction!!!
