The road that led to the California Spyder was not direct or logical. Instead it was more of an idea fueled by a few Ferrari enthusiasts. West Coast Ferrari dealer, Johnny von Neumann believed an open-top Ferrari would cater to his California customers who regularly drove cars with the top down. The idea for the California Spyder was thus put forth by Luigi Chinetti to Ferrari and subsequently a prototype was created. Of the approximately 51 Long Wheelbase (LWB) Californias made, at least 10 were built for competition and nine of these were made with aluminum bodies. 1627GT was one of them. This rare California Spyder features a tipo 508 D frame, one of nine created. 1627GT is also one of the initial California Spyders to be equipped with disc brakes, an innovation for its time. The car is fitted with covered headlights, and the legendary V-12 128D engine, upgraded from its predecessor, the 128C. At 7000 rpm, the car has a horsepower of 240HP. Special features include a factory ordered lack of side vents in the front fenders and the double finish of red over red hides and a black soft top. Installed with a 2600 mm wheelbase; 1627GT was made as a competition car. The engine has never been removed from the car and 1627GT contains the last inside plug Ferrari engine ever built. Completed in December 1959, 1627GT was sent to Ferrari dealer Luigi Chinetti in New York, in January of 1960. The car was sold new to Magnason, a property developer and avid car enthusiast, in Miami, FL. In 1962, Styles from Coral Gables, FL, purchased the car from Magnason and, his son Billy damaged both sides, as he was run off the road, on his way back from a fishing tournament, at Ocean Reef, in Key Largo, FL. The car landed between 2 bridge abutments. In 1965, Styles subsequently sold the car to, noted Ferrari Collector George Shelly in Florida who had some of the damaged side body panels restored in steel instead of alloy. In the early 70s, 1627GT was sold to Sternberg from NY, before being traded again in the early 80s, when it went to Japan. In the early 90s, the car was shipped back to California, surveyed and serviced, by Patrick Ottis of Berkley CA, before being purchased by its current guardian who has gently enjoyed and maintained the car for the past 17 years. All inner structures are still in their original factory alloy form including the firewall, the inner fenders, the door frames, as well as the hood and the trunk lid. The wheels were converted from metric to US specs and presently have the correct early 60’s Borrani wires. The car also still retains its original gear shift knob, ash tray, owner’s manual and tool kit.
