Vehicle Detail
For sale is my 1987 Fiero GT. It has its original 2.8L V6 engine, and an automatic transmission. Please note there are 60 images below. Also note there is no reserve and I am now accepting cashier's checks. Also note the actual mileage for this vehicle is in dispute (see Faults section below). History and Description I purchased this car in early 2005 for $3500 from a used car dealer in Titusville, FL. I don't remember the exact date, but the issue date on the title is February 7, 2005. The car sat on the lot for at least 4-5 months before I bought it. The dealership didn't own the car; the dealer was actually a proxy seller for a friend of his. I never met the owner, but the story of the car as related to me by the dealer, whether true or not, is below: The car was sold to me by it's second owner, and the first owner was the second owner's mother. Apparently the first owner was an elderly lady who didn't drive the car very much. The second owner inherited the car when his mother passed away and did some restoration work to it (as shown in a table below) before selling it. The title doesn't indicate the mileage on the car when I purchased it, but I recall the odometer reading somewhere between 58,000 and 59,000 miles. The second owner was a member of Space Coast Fieros at the time, and I remember seeing pictures of the owner and the car at their wbesite. I no longer see him on the member's list, and member Frank Martin has told me that the previous owner has since moved to Tennessee. Although the car still has the "Space Coast Fieros" logo on the back window, I have never been a member of their organization. I kept the car under my car-port at the house I was renting at the time, until I married my wife and moved into my current home in 2007, where it's been kept in the garage. You can see from the mileage that I haven't driven it very much in the five years I've owned it (about 6,000 miles over 5 years equals about 1,200 miles a year). I was a smoker when I purchased the car, and did smoke occasionally in it, but I quit on Monday, August 13, 2007. The car currently gives no indication it was ever smoked in. I've regarded the car mostly as a project car, and as a fallback whenever my truck isn't working for whatever reason; it has never been my primary transportation. As such, I've invested quite a bit in it myself, detailed below. Aside from the faults described further below, the car is in good running condition, and I don't see any reason why it couldn't be driven to your destination after purchase. Below is a list of noteworthy modifications I have performed to the car since I purchased it (does not include maintenance such as brake work, ball joints, oil changes, spark plugs, washes, waxes, etc). Also, prices shown are current prices as of June 25, 2010, and may not be exactly what I paid for them. This came with the car, and I hate it. I never took it off because I figured I'd have to replace the mirror underneath if I did. It appears to have been stuck on with tape, and I imagine pulling it off would leave a nasty residue. B3 This image was taken to show the vertical streaks on the driver side window. Locate the first zero in the date stamp, and go straight up to see them. E3 This image was taken to show the vertical streaks on the passenger side window. In the window's reflection, you'll see they block out the truck's tail-light. F4 This image was taken to show some minor scratches on the paint. This is the view standing to the right of the passenger door, and looking down at the hood. The scratches are almost imperceptible in the picture, but they're slightly below and to the right of the center of the image. A5 This image was taken to show some minor scratches on the paint. The scratches are almost imperceptible and on the front bumper. See also B5. B5 This image was taken to show some minor scratches on the paint. The scratches are almost imperceptible and on the front bumper. See also A5. C5 This image was taken to show some white spotting on the paint. This is a view of the driver-side front fender. D5 This image was taken to show some scratches on the paint. Notice the spots to the right of the door (these were there when I bought the car). E5 The pictures of the digital dash don't really do it justice due to the reflections... D6 This picture didn't come out very well, but I assure you the text around the controls is quite clear. E6 This picture shows that the a/c control panel is slightly lopsided due to the deterioration of the console it bolts into (see faults section). The blue spot below the radio and left of the shift knob isn't really there. F6 See comment for E5. A7 See comment for E5. B7 This was the only picture I've modified, and that was only to rotate it. When saving, the file size decreased quite a bit, so I imagine some detail was lost. See also comment for D6 regarding text. C8 You can see the "Space Coast Fieros" logo wasn't applied perfectly straight. This condition existed when I bought the car. F10 This picture was taken to show a fairly large dent in the driver side door. It's barely noticeable unless you're standing at the proper angle. This was already there when I purchased the car. Below is a list of the car's most noticeable faults. I think you'll agree that none of them are really all that bad. However, recall this car is about 25 years of age, not a brand new car right off the assembly line. The car certainly isn't perfect, and it is not my goal to present it as being so. Faults Mileage The AutoCheck Vehicle History report indicates this vehicle has 90,779 in May of 1995. The car was sold to me with the impression that the odometer was correct (somewhere around 58,000 miles). The odometer currently reads 64,064 (see image F5). Either I was had, or somebody entered the wrong mileage. Neither case is far-fetched, unless you really believe that government agencies or employees never make mistakes. Whatever the case, the car is what it is; you can see what's been invested in it, and it is a very nice car nonetheless. Driver Side Headlight I had to replace the headlights not too long ago, and didn't realize the proper procedure involved removing the front decklid (hood). As such, I broke the retaining ring that goes around the driver's side headlight (although the one on the passenger side survived). I've used a piece of twine to hold the light in place as a temporary fix, but never got around to fixing it properly. A replacement is available from The Fiero Store for $9.95. Passenger Side Headlight The day I took the pictures of the car for this auction (July 11, 2007), I thought I'd put the headlights up and take a picture of it. On doing so, I found the passenger side headlight won't go up all the way (hence, no picture). If you need to use the headlights, you can disconnect the motor and crank them up by hand. There are various sources of reasonably priced help available for fixing this problem including Fiero Headlight Motors and The Fiero Store. Horn For some unknown reason, the horn doesn't work. It stopped working the day I replaced the steering wheel. The assembly underneath the horn button on the steering wheel appears to be set up properly, and I've use a voltage tester at the steering wheel and ascertained there is current there (closing the circuit with the voltage tester should've caused the horn to sound, but still nothing). I checked the fuse on the fuse block, and it's ok. I even replaced the horn relay (underneath the passenger side dash), but still nothing. I figured the next time I took the car to a mechanic that I'd have them look at it, but that time never came. Windshield Wipers Every few minutes, the windshield wipers will go up and down for no apparent reason. I haven't investigated the cause of this, but when it's not raining, I disconnect the wiper relay(?) inside the front compartment. The wiper blades themselves should be replaced as well. A/C Controller As revealed in image E6, the a/c controller is lopsided. This is because the frame that the a/c controller bolts into is deteriorating. The radio suffers from the same problem as well, but it's not as noticeable since it's not lopsided. A/C The air conditioner does not work for some unknown reason. The fan blows, but the air is not cold. It's been this way since I bought the car. The heater works though... Paint & Body See comments for images F4, A5, B5, C5, D5, and F10. Windows See comments for images B3 and E3. Seats The previous owner didn't install the seats perfectly straight, although I don't have a picture that illustrates this very well. The seats themselves are in great condition though. Parking Brake The parking brake doesn't work, and never has as long as I've owned the car. It probably has something to do with the custom brake job the previous owner did. Having an automatic transmission and living in a flat area, I've never had the need to get it fixed. Steering There is some noticeable vibration when the car reaches about 60-65 miles per hour. Oil System The car has a minor oil leak somewhere as I've noticed some very small oil spots on my garage floor...none much bigger than a 50 cent piece despite the car residing here for over 3 years. Radio I always listened to my own CDs and never the radio, so when I had that ridiculous CB antenna removed, I also removed the radio antenna and had them fill in the hole. Personally, I think the car looks much better without it, but there's now no radio reception. My friend's got a hidden antenna in his car that works really well...I figured I'd get one of those sooner or later but never did... Tires I would guess the tires probably have about 20% of their life remaining... Digital Dash There's something wrong with the coolant and gas gauges that causes them to mis-report the actual values. The coolant gauge will typically show a level much hotter than the actual value, and the gas gauge will show a level much lower than the actual value. To make matters more annoying, when the coolant level gets too hot, or the gas level too low, the numbers start blinking. I've e-mailed the retailer about this, and here is what I wrote: I bought a set of your digital gauges somewhere around a couple years ago, and for most of the time I've had them, the fuel and coolant gauges do not display the proper information. After a few minutes of the car running, the reading on the temperature gauge will increase to its max reading of 255 degrees, and the fuel reading will drop way below what's really in the tank. Do you have any recommendations for what I might try to correct the problem? If nothing works out, would it be possible to exchange for or buy another temp/fuel unit since all the other gauges in the set have worked fine? Below is their reply: I contacted the manufacturer and he sent me information regarding your issues. Try this and see if it helps. There is a problem that many Fiero owners have - bad grounding. You need to check your ground connections from the battery to the engine, battery to the frame, and engine to the frame. You may need to even add some of the ground connections mentioned. Adding a ground from the back of the fuel/temp gauge to the fuel tank and/or engine block may fix it in one shot. I have had other people with similar problems and fixing/adding grounds always seems to fix the problem. A lot of times it will fix other problems that you didn't know were ground related. If you still have problems, let me know and we will see what we can do. Actually, please let me know if it fixes the problem too!! Thanks. Marty Jakolat, Owner PISA - The Fiero HQ I never got around to working on the problem, but should you choose to, hopefully this information will help. If you do purchase the car, I would recommend requesting a copy of the installation instructions from the retailer as I have lost the ones that came with the gauges. The instructions might help give you some insight into solving the problem. Radiator Fan This isn't so much a fault as it is another questionable modification done by the previous owner. For whatever reason, he apparently wanted greater control over the radiator fan, and so there's a switch for it underneath the steering column which will manually turn the fan on and off. The radiator fan was designed to turn on when the coolant exceeds 230 degrees Fahrenheit. I've seen no reason why the system shouldn't run as designed, and so I've operated the fan accordingly. Payment Details, Transfer of Ownership, and Other Disclaimers Full payment for the vehicle is required within 2 weeks of the end of the auction. Only cash and/or a cashier's check will be accepted, no exceptions. If paying with a cashier's check, it must be cleared with my bank before you can take possession of the vehicle. As such, plan on making payment during typical banking hours. You must also take the car with you upon making payment; I will not continue to store it for you, nor will I deliver it. Upon paying for the car, I will sign the title over to you. Also recorded upon the title will be the full amount paid for the car and the mileage currently shown on the odometer. The box stating "I hereby certify that the odometer reading is not the actual mileage" will also be checked. The DMV here in Florida doesn't care about mileage on vehicles of cars this age; non-Florida residents should check with their own state's laws. Florida residents should also expect to pay 6% sales tax upon requesting a new title. All bidders should check with their own state's laws to determine whatever fees their state will assess. This car is sold as is, and the sale will be final with no warranties of any kind expressed or implied. There will also be no refunds, exchanges, etc. I am not a mechanic, and as such cannot give a trained professional's assessment of this vehicle. Even then, most mechanics aren't perfect predictors of the future. The car, to the best of my knowledge, is in good running condition and I have listed all its known faults as honestly and openly as possible. Bidders should also keep in mind that this car is approaching 25 years of age. You are encouraged to come and view the vehicle before bidding if you so desire. The car is currently not insured, so if you would like to test drive it, you must provide proof that you are insured for driving vehicles owned by somebody other than yourself. Please make arrangements with me through E-bay messaging. I am typically available during the evenings on weekdays, and all day Sundays.
