Vehicle Detail

Vintage 1962 Mercedes Benz 220Seb Fuel Injected I am letting go of a beloved, rare and very beautiful car. Only 4,287 of these hand-built cars were produced in 1962. This car is not a show car, but a daily driver in decent condition that gets attention everywhere it goes. It is a thrill to take friends for a drive on a summer evening in this classy, luxurious automobile. This W111 chasissed model, the brainchild of Mercedes legends Paul Bracq, Josef Muller and Rudi Ulenhaut was debuted the year before as a “car of the future”. The last year of this model was 1965, so there are not many of them around from any vintage. It is a true driver’s car – often compared to the Rolls Royce Corniche, although this model handled better - which makes them increasingly hard to find as they are snatched up by collectors. It was the first fuel injected car sold in America and the first to be crash tested and designed with a safety “crumple zone” and a rigid safety cell, designed by Italian car designer Bela Barenyi and patented by Daimler-Benz in 1951. The lower case “b” designated the fuel injected, 2.2L straight six coupe, but did not appear on any badging. Due to fuel injection the car starts easily, pulls strongly through the gears, drives beautifully and cruises effortlessly at 80mph. A little smoke when first started after sitting a while dissipates quickly. Automatic transmission and sunroof are both rare on this model. This car lives up the great reputation of this series. I repainted the car one year ago with Mercedes PD3 Brilliant Silver and 963 Indian Gray Metallic. I also replaced the carpet and much of the the red leather interior upholstery (see photos), but did not replace the leather along the bottom of the console which has a small tear (see photo) just below the radio. The interior wood around the windshield was recently refinished. A new Daimler windshield was installed by the local Mercedes dealership. I also replaced the distributor cap, spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter and rebuilt the fuel pump last year. The car has two new tires, a new battery and new seat belts. I replaced the instrument panel – the original odometer showed 61,139, but had stopped working at some unknown point. I will list everything I know of that the car needs: The heater wires were disconnected when I came into possession of the car and I have not attempted to reconnect. The original radio is in the car, but is not working (the previous owner said it worked before, so it may only need a fuse or speaker?). Brakes work better with a single light pump. I think there is a slow leak in the power steering. The sunroof needs springs replaced and therefore does not open – I have a line on the parts if needed. There is normal undercarriage and trunk rust. Horn button has been moved to under dash. There is a space of about a quarter of an inch in the wood on the instrument cluster cowl that I have not been able to close and have not gotten around to getting a shop to address. Pretty normal stuff for a car of this age. This was a California car until last year, when I drove it from Sacramento to the dry climate of Santa Fe, NM. The seller claimed to be the second owner. This is a drop dead gorgeous, excellent operating, attention getting car in better than average condition with a “Buy it Now” price well below “average” NADA specs: Low retail: $12,800 Average retail: $19,200 High Retail: $28,900 E-mail me at Crawford@crawfordmalone.com or call at (505) 982-4583 for any additional info or specific photos. Deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance is required with 7 business days. Buyer is responsible for shipping, handling and arrangements. The above description offers full disclosure to the best of my knowledge, however due to the age of the car I cannot guarantee anything and recommend a professional inspection at buyers cost before bidding on the car and before the auction ends. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. I have clear title on this vehicle.
