1947 Studebaker Champion Deluxe 3 passenger business coupe. Overdrive. radio/heater/turn signals. Serial G2554417, 85.000 miles. Be sure and follow the more pictures link at the end of my description ! As some of you may know, I find nice Studebakers around the country, fix them up and find new homes for them on Ebay. I bought this nice 1947 Studebaker Champion coupe in California. I had a Studebaker friend haul it to his home near Woodland Ca to prep for resale. Just over 5000 business coupes were built for the 1947 model year. They were the perfect cars for the salesman, with the trunk area extending into what would have been the back seat and giving lots of storage space. The previous owner parked it after a brake job a number of years ago when it failed to move in gear. Once we got her running, we found a axle key had been left out during the brake work, replaced it, and went for a spin. She starts right up, runs smoothly and drives out fine. The factory cloth wiring harness is the weak link on this car, and rather than trust it, we just wired the car to start and run with the key. New stock harnesses have been reproduced, or a Painless harness would work if she's rodded. If you are on a budget, a weekend and some electrical tape might suffice. While the car stops fine, I'd recommend a check of the brake system and the rest and some local driving before a real road trip. As you would expect for a California car, the body is very solid with only minor rust bubbles down way low on the bottom of the trunk lip. (see my friends description down page) The chrome is pretty decent, with only minor pitting. The paint is driver quality, with some aging, and typical chips. A previous owner painted the roof white, possibly to keep the cabin cooler. The car has had turn signal added, and is equipped with the optional front fender ornaments, tissue dispenser, wheel trim rings and stainless stone guards. The factory radio is installed, but with a broken antenna and wiring issues, we did not check it out. The car could be freshened up and driven as is, or it could be restored or rodded. The 3 passenger coupes are rare and collectable today and I've included a few pictures of restored and rodded versions on my "more pictures" link down lower. The interior is pretty much all there, but other than the very nice headliner, is pretty tired and will need new factory upholstery or a custom interior,. The factory rubber floor mat is dried out and cracking, and the seat upholstery is split. My side business is selling Studebaker interiors and I can provide a interior for the winning bidder at below my cost. If you are going stock, I'll sell the seat upholstery, carpets and door panel vinyl for $300 to your door. Install that, paint the steering wheel, do some odds and ends and call the interior done. The truck/ storage area is pretty solid, needing fresh paint and still contains the factory jack. As a ex-car stereo store owner, it occurred to me that this trunk could house some serious stereo equipment. Here's my friend's comments on the car after working on her: "If you're looking for a straight rust free example of a Business Coupe, this is the car. I ran a magnet over all the usual spots that might have Bondo on a Studebaker and found none. The floors are solid, the rockers are good, the fenders are sound and the only small bubbles anywhere are in the lower lip of the trunk and even those are minor. This is an amazingly great body on this car. The engine starts and runs and the trans shifts well in all gears. It has driveway brakes so they should be gone through anyway. Brakes are the most important system. The interior is fair, it's been redone at some time in the past and is showing some age. The vinyl on the seats is dry in places, but is quite usable as is. The gages appear to work and it even comes with a radio that still has all the knobs in place. One feature that is somewhat rare is the tissue dispenser. It needs some paint, but it is a great novelty item which swings out from under the dash. It holds a standard size box of tissues. The ladies will love it. The glass is very decent with some bubbling but again, is quite usable for now as a driver. The only cracked glass is the flat glass on the passenger side front windshield. The beauty of a two piece windshield being only the broken side needs fixed. The passenger side door latch is being stubborn and sometimes will not open from the outside. I have not pulled the door panel to adjust it, but it is typically an easy fix. The weak part of the car is the wiring, some wires are showing bare and some insulation is brittle. I've wired it to run, but the rest of the system is bypassed for now. Overall, this is a great little car which needs little to make it fabulous. The body is as straight as it looks, though the paint is not as good as it shows in the pictures. Its definitely a 20 footer. This car will be a show stopper for any restoration or hot rodder.
