Vehicle Detail
1988 Pontiac Firebird. T-Tops, 305 TBI V-8, Auto Trans. 94,600 miles. Ground effects pkg, 16” wheels. Runs strong and shifts nice. Inspection good until April 2011. Has newer starter, radiator, windshield, KYB shocks/struts, front springs, Fram AirHog air filter, Accel ignition module and wires, and platinum plugs. Rear brake shoes are new, front calipers recently replaced, front brakes 90%, tires are 40%. Battery is strong and turns the engine easily. Both popup headlights work fine, and all the gages work. The driving lights are for show, but could be made functional easily. The car has a performance catback system; it is older and I am not sure of the brand, but it sounds nice. T-tops go in and out easily, and the car has the storage bag. Spare tire looks to be in good condition, but I never had to use it. No other power options or special features to speak of. The car has little rust, especially for a PA/NJ car. Great car, lots of fun. I no longer have the time or money to invest in it though. I primarily bought it for a summer car, and for a side hobby. The car runs great, but there are a few things that I would have liked to finish. When I bought it, the passenger front was damaged. I had the frame pulled and the car aligned, but it is not 100%, as the front passenger tire rubs when the steering is cut all the way to the right. Some dimpling of the inner fender with a hammer might help this. The weatherstripping should be replaced, and the drivers door sags slightly. The A/C does not work, I never tried to fix it. The car could use some paint work from old bodywork and the new fender that was installed (it was supposedly painted a few years back, I am assuming when the drivers side was hit). The idle air control valve may need to be replaced (easy job, $40 part) as it has a shaky idle when it is just getting warmed up. I recently replaced the EGR valve, as I was getting a trouble code on the highway. I have not gotten the code since, but I can’t make any guarantees it fixed the problem. There is a little smoke at startup, but it is probably from aged valve seals or loose valve guides. My mechanic told me not to worry about it for the time being. The door locks are either keyed wrong or need to be lubricated, as it is difficult to unlock the doors. The rest of the car just shows regular wear and tear over 20+ years of use. The interior is in pretty good shape, and is fairly complete with the exception of the ashtray cover and some cracked plastic on the seat belt latches, which there was a recall for. This would make a great father/son project, and is a safe bet for someone who just wants something to have fun with. It still looks sharp and is fun to drive.
