Vehicle Detail
Truly a beautiful car that turns heads! 1984 Mercedes-Benz 280SL (EURO). Garage kept. Non-smoker. R107 Chassis. Straight Six engine with a five speed manual transmission and great european styling (square headlamps, smaller bumpers with chrome, etc.). Heated front seats. Optional rear seats. Working A/C. Power antenna works. The red pagoda hard top has rear defrost (liner is in good shape). The black soft top was replace sometime before I purchased the car and is in good shape (see pics). Wheels are later model (1990's). Imported to USA from Germany by editor of Benz Scene magazine (I have the car’s metal plate/plaque as well as a copy of a Benz Scene magazine with her name on it). The odometer is fully functional and correct. It was converted from km to miles when it arrived in the states (as required). The driver side pillar has the legal sticker issued by the State of Michigan when the change was completed. The car had 297 km (roughly 185 miles) when imported and now has total mileage of approximately 93,000. The car has a clean PA Title. I currently have a classic license plate on the car but the car has previously passed safety and emissions inspections in the states of Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): WDB1070421A001920 This is a beautiful car that starts right up and drives well. I've had no mechanical problems but please keep in mind that this is a 26 year old car and there is normal wear and tear. I'd say that the overall condition is good (original - not restored). The photographs are representative of the car and it's appearance - please feel free to ask any questions. The price range for this car (NADA) is $12,800 - $16,600 - $23,000 (low, average and high retail respectively). I have priced the car to sell fast, however. The price also takes into account that the car is original and not in perfect condition. So, if you want a great deal on a beautiful Mercedes-Benz SL convertible with a 5-speed manual transmission and less than 100K miles - this the one! This car is for sale locally as well as on other sites and I reserve the right to end the auction if the car is sold elsewhere before the reserve is met. This vehicle is "as-is" / "where-is". There is no warranty expressed or implied. You are welcome to make arrangements to inspect the car mechanically and visually before you place a bid. Buyer must pickup the car at close of sale or arrange for immediate shipping (at buyer's expense). Please bid only if you have the financing ready to go and be sure to review my payment terms (PayPal deposit and Cashier's Check for balance). In addition to the purchase price of the car, the buyer is responsible for ALL applicable taxes, title transfer, registration fees, etc. Here are some general Q & A's on the car: Q- Miles to the Gallon? A- Average in mid 20's: 17(+/-)Cty and 27(+/-)Hwy. This is based on my personal experience and is backed up by the information in the owner's manual. Q- Does everything work on the car? A- The lights, A/C, heat, radio, etc. all work. The left driver side vent does not have strong air flow but the A/C itself, heat and other vents work well. The cigarette lighter does not work (never an issue since non-smoker). Of course, the car is 26 years old and has the original paint - so expect normal nicks, etc. but nothing major. The car is essentially the same as when I purchased just over six years ago. Q- Do you have maintenance records? Can I schedule my mechanic to come look it over? A- There are some records from when I purchased the car. I spent about $1,000.00 for a complete tune up when I brought the car into PA and the car had all of the required safety and emissions inspections (and passed) until a I put the classic license plate on the car (i.e., the classic tag makes the car excempt from emissions inspection plus classic insurance provides roughly $15,000 of coverage for approx. $150.00 per year)! Feel free to have your mechanic come look it over. I don't have any worries there. I'm not mechanical but I don't believe there is anything that will scare anyone away. Besides, I only added 10,000 documented miles in the time that I've owned the car and 90% of the milage was probably put on the first year or so... Q- Beautiful Mercedes. Why are you selling? Why is your "Buy it Now" so low if the NADA pricing is $12,000.00 and up? A- Regardless of any "book" value, a car is only worth what the market is willing to pay. In this economy - the market isn't willing to give me $12,500 for the car although I still believe that is what it is worth. I also think people are more comfortable buying from a "car dealer" - even online - but almost all cars this old are for sale "as is". That means once you buy the car (from me or a dealer) - it's YOURS. Mine has been desribed as acurately as I can withhout over selling it... Q- Can I drive the car home if I win the bidding? A- There are no major issues to my knowledge. You can drive the car home if you win. The clutch and transmission seem very good and the car drives well. The engine runs fine and the car brakes well. The wheels are in nice shape and there is good tread on the tires. I could get on a highway now and hit 65 miles per hour + with no problem. Overall - it is a great car but, again, it is 26 years old. Im am not a mechanic but I am not aware of any major mechanical issues. Q- What is the history of the car? A- This is my understanding based on some documentation that came with the car and from what I was told when I purchased it: The car was built and delievered to the US for the oiginal owner (i.e., the editor mentioned in my desription). It appears that she died only two or three years after importing the car and it went to her estate. Whoever received the car through the estate had the car for a number of years. Eventually the car went to a classic car dealer (still in Michigan) and I purchased it from them while I was living in Ohio. The car appeared well cared for and did not appear to be driven in the winter - which is why I had no hesitation to buy it just over six years ago. I purchased it as a personal vehicle simply because I thought it was beautiful. It was not purchased as an investment or for potential resale - and my current sale price is nowhere near what I paid... After living in Ohio for a short time, I brought the car with me from Ohio to PA when I moved. Q- How much do you REALLY want for the car? A- Well, I REALLY want $12,500.00 but I've lowered my expectations! The lowest I will accept is the lowest you can bid and win the car at during this listing. Q- I'm actually looking to buy this car for my friend/cousin/sister/wife. Can you give me a call so that we can work out a price offline? A- No. Please Bid if you are intersted. You are welcome to come see the car in person, have a mechanic look it over, test drive it, etc. but the lowest price I will accept has been factored in this listing anyway. NOTE: Please bid on this car through eBay and contact me through eBay. Please do not contact me immediately after the auction ends. Only current bidders will receive a "second chance" offer from me. If the car does not sell above my minimum price, I will either relist it or I will keep the car (and start driving it much more frequently)!
