A perennial show winner and now the subject of a three page feature in the July 2010 issue of Dune Buggies and Hot VW’s magazine (at newsstands now), this sweet Westy has been meticulously cared for a number of years by one of this nation’s leading VW enthusiasts. It is a genuine numbers-matching, 100% correct and complete Wetfalia camping car, clean and attractive, with all of VW’s original SO-42 camping options that will add to your fun, including the ultra-rare Westy Big Top Tent. Driven just 61,800 documented miles from new, we have original window sticker and dealer invoice dating from the day it was delivered – June 3, 1965, as well as a 3 ring binder containing maintenance and repair receipts from day one. It is a multiple trophy winner – this incredible Westy took Best in Class trophies at the April 2010 VW Texas Classis in Fredericksberg. It is a special machine – an impressive, appreciating collectible that would be an asset to any private collection – fully functional with many years of appreciation ahead of it. Vintage Volkswagen spit window Westfalia campers are in big demand today because of their increased desirability. This one is an absolute treasure, and I believe it will surely please the lucky winner of this auction. Original VW Delog front windshield glass. Original front lap seat belts. Original camping interior. Original clamshell light covers in camping compartment. Original mustard vinyl camping upholstery. Original Hehr Jalousie crank windows restored to like-new with cleaning, polishing and new glass. New Hella front turn-signal lenses. New TMI front seat covers. New roof rail ladder. New pop-top tent canvas. New bud vase on dash. EMPI cab steps. Historically, the Westy’s original owner took delivery from Douglas Motor Corporation in Summit, New Jersey on June 3, 1965, paying the sum of $3,381.95 after undercoating, side step and seat belts were added – a small fortune at the time. The engine was rebuilt at 51,000 miles and the Westy eventually was purchased by a Dallas attorney who intended to restore it, but never got around to it. Our current renowned enthusiast purchased it in 2002 and treated it to a complete exterior and interior restoration, and then zoomed off to the shows, consistently landing trophy after trophy. Mechanically, this Westy is powered by its original 1500cc powerplant – engine No. 0929145 – and it runs perfectly. It was rebuilt at 51,000 original miles, and has never needed any attention since, but for routine maintenence. It starts without hesitation and sounds exactly as it should. It needs absolutely nothing at all – it is very tight and solid, and waiting to take you wherever you’d like to go. It is mated to its original 4 speed manual transmission which shifts smoothly and flawlessly. With its original gear reduction boxes, it has plenty of get up and go. Top speed is 55 - 60MPH. Brakes are in good order. It rides great and goes down the road good and straight. Tire tread is 95% - the Camper rides on new P185/R14 radial blackwalls and has a matching spare in the rear hatch wheel well. Recent mechanical updates include: Fresh oil. New points. Valves, brakes and clutch fully adjusted. Seat belts for two – there are two original belts up front. Original Bilstein jack (looks never-used) and original German tool kit in leatherette pouch are included. Electrical system is in excellent working order, and it is the stronger, more reliable 12 volt electrical system (1967 was the first year that VW transitioned from 6 volt electronics to 12 volt). All exterior lighting including headlamps, parking, turn signal and tag lights function properly. Horn, wipers, dash gauges, indicators and dash lights are all operational, as is the dome light and the two wall-mounted camping section lamps. Exterior-wise, this great Westfalia is exceptionally attractive because our enthusiast-restorer disassembled and removed the interior, stripped it inside and out to bare metal, shot it with PPG etching primer, then PPG heavy fill primer, blocked, then shot with PPG’s Concept Acrylic Urethane single-stage mixed to VW’s original code L-87 Pearl White. The pop-top wheels and bumpers were given the same treatment, then a coat of L-82 Silver White. It is very straight with no evidence of any collision repair. Genuine VW chrome hubcaps. Front split windshield glass is original VW Delog-logo’d with no chips or cracks. All original Securit side, vent and rear window glass. Interior-wise, you will find the original rubber mats in the walk-thru section in excellent condition. Original cab roof panels. The front door panels were beautifully recovered. The front seat upholstery by TMI is new. Front and camping section doors, rear hatch door and engine door are in good working order. The Westfalia laminated cabinets and interior paneling are beautiful, and the original Westfalia mustard yellow upholstery is in excellent condition. Heater and ventilation levers work fine, and all louvered windows, screens and vent window locks are in good order.
