This neat Samba reposed in California until a few years ago when it was purchased by two of North Texas’ leading VW enthusiasts who zoomed off to the shows winning awards and trophies galore, here and regionally. It is a multiple trophy winner – eight (8), that's right, eight Best in Class trophies at VW and classic car shows here in North Texas, plus it earned more pick of the show awards as well. It still has its factory sunroof deluxe features, plus custom chrome bumper and window accents, an I-POD equipped stereo system, a remote-controlled theft-deterrent system, new sunroof canvas, genuine Fuchs chromed wheels, and period-correct Texas license plates. It is a special machine – an impressive, appreciating collectible that would be an asset to any private collection – fully functional with many years of appreciation ahead of it. Historically, this cute 21 Window Samba was restored in Southern California and was owned by a successful musician who was formerly a student of mine here at the University of North Texas, who offered it for sale, and eventually sold it to two pre-eminent North Texas VW enthusiasts. By the looks of it and particularly over the past several years, it appears that post-restoration, the bus has never seen rain – always garaged. Mechanically, the drivetrain and all other mechanical and electrical systems have been upgraded, inspected, and adjusted. As a result, you will experience a better ride and drive that would have been expected with its original power and gearing. You can hop right in, turn the key and go down the road confidently. It has a 1600cc dual port engine – 50 horses eagerly await you, and it has a stock, ceramic exhaust. It has a freeway flyer gearbox mated to its original reduction boxes, making safe top end cruising speed approximately 65-70 mph. Here is a summary of work routine work recently performed: Fresh oil New Bosch plugs New points Valves adjusted Brake system inspected and adjusted. Exterior-wise, this attractive 21 Window Samba Microbus was disassembled and painted inside and out in a gorgeous pink and white color theme that will draw the eye of every onlooker who passes by. The paintwork is excellent and it has maintained its brilliance primarily due to original quality of the job and also due to the locations of its owners – Southern California, and dry North Texas. There are a few dings and touched-up chips that are present but they are practically imperceptible, and I do not believe they detract in any way from the beauty of this great Samba Microbus. From its track record of trophies and awards, the show judges agree. The bumper blades, guards and overriders were removed during restoration and were chrome plated. All of the bumper chrome is superb; you will find no chipping or thin finish. The original restorer chromed the cab window frames, the vent wings and the pop-out frames to compliment the bumper chrome, and the result is additional flash to support the attractive paintwork. All of its original deluxe beltline trim, rocker spear trim, and trim end caps are present and accounted for, along with their black rubber trim inserts. It looks phenomenal as you can see from the photos. Interior-wise, you will find one of the cleanest custom Samba Microbus interiors available on the market today – done in white with pink seat piping and panel inserts, with grey piping panel accents to match the wall-to-wall carpeting. All three rows of seats are present with original grab bars on the middle seat. You will find no rips or tears on these beautiful white seat covers. All interior panels are of excellent quality with color-matching piping and inserts, all in great condition. The headliner is a perforated vinyl reproduction and is in good condition with no rips or tears. Covering the floors is an expensive treatment that includes gray end-stitched wall-to-wall carpet with interior panel inserts and end-stitched mats that cover the front cab floor and cab bulkhead as well as the rear deck luggage compartment. Original deluxe jail bars and rear seat luggage bars. The original Golde sunroof mechanism is in good working order, seals tightly. New sunroof canvas. Interior panels with inserts and piping color-matched to paint and carpet. Color matched cab door pulls. New sunvisors. Nice headliner with no rips or tears. Two color-matching lap seat belts in cab. Original jail bars and rear seat luggage bars (deluxe-only features). Chrome door handles. New Sunroof canvas. Speedometer/odometer and dash indicators all work properly. Fuel gauge is present but inoperative. Working windshield wipers and horn. Dash is beautiful. Restored steering wheel with no cracks. Sekurit roof window glass, door glass and pop-out window glass are free of chips or cracks. Pop-out window latches open and close properly. Outside rearview mirrors are in good condition. Electrical system was upgraded to the more reliable 12-volt system with alternator. Interior and exterior lighting: low and high headlight beams, turn signals, rear dome light, dash indicator lights are operative. All doors, including passenger compartment doors, cargo and engine doors open and close properly. All door locks function properly.
