1977 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Entry Level Project This FJ40 is a mild-medium skill project with a lot of money already spent on it. I own a FJ40 restoration shop, I buy 1976-83 FJ40’s on a regular basis for restoration for myself, customer, or re-sale. I only restore those years because they have disc brakes, 4 speeds, 2F motor, much of the upgraded parts everyone wants. If you buy an early FJ40, most people are not happy with the 3 speed, drum brakes, F motor and end up upgrading. I do those upgrades in my shop often, the parts from Spector are over $4000, plus the labor to do it. So, why not start off with the right stuff. I bought this from an elderly man whom owned this since new. He was in the process of restoring it when illness got the better of him. I bought it in a mound of pieces. I’ve bolted the large parts back on it, all the little stuff is in boxes. I have it running and driving, if you don’t mind sitting on a milk crate you can drive it too. Mechanical The stock 2F motor was rebuilt in 2006. It has just a few miles on it since rebuild. Compression tested out perfect, oil pressure perfect. It fires right up, doesn’t burn any oil. The carburetor is an electric choke 2 barrel Holley. The clutch, trans, t-case are work great, no odd noises from any of it. The brakes work ok, they do need to be bleed. Body This FJ40 had and has the typical rust. The paint is original. The hard top is beautiful. The front doors are good, the ambulance doors are ok. The driver side floor has been cut out, a new CCOT replacement floor is sitting in there, will need to be welded in. CCOT rocker panels are just tack welded in, the passenger side entire quarter from CCOT is loose and included. The passenger floor and trans cover are perfect. The rear needs some love. CCOT makes a replacement for that one as well. The fenders are new CCOT. There is a new CCOT bumper and bumperettes included. I bolted the large panels for easy transport, nothing will fly off. New traction tires with studs installed. Use them for winter or get out your pliers and pull them out. $1800 worth of new CCOT stuff. I have most of the small parts in boxes, nuts bolts etc. I will do my best to include every part I have in my inventory that may be missing to make this a complete vehicle. I know it will need a windshield and 2 rear jump seats. This project isn’t that costly to finish, just time consuming. All the expensive stuff is done. 76-83 FJ40’s are worth 15-45k when restored depending how far you go. This is a great project at a reasonable price. I have a clean clear WA state title not sale priced or dated in the previous owner’s name. I never got around to transfer, no reason for that now, it will transfer directly to you.
