Vehicle Detail
For sale by owner: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Specifications: Pontiac 400 (Not numbers matching. Engine appears to be from a 1978 from what I have found. The VIN code on the engine is 40482, and the Engine code is X7. From what I have found, X7 means the engine was originally in a 1978 with an automatic transmission. Also, the engine has 6X heads.) 4 speed transmission with Hurst shifter Rear axle was originally a 3.23, but appears to have been swapped to a lower ratio at some point, due to the relatively low top speed of the car as it sits now. Non-air conditioning car Manual roll up windows WS6 package ( 4 wheel disc brakes, thicker roll bars front and back) Aftermarket chrome roll bar (bolt in. previous owner installed) Original t-tops with original bags Just under 75,000 miles. Original paint and interior. Very rust free car, only minor surface rust here and there. Only other rust is under the battery on the inner fender, from battery venting over the years. This car has been kept indoors for much of its life, and it shows. There are small dings and some of the paint is wearing thin or gone in places, but it’s ORIGINAL. Also, the trunk lid and hood were ‘keyed’ by somebody at some point in the past. See photos. The the car had a rust preventative applied to the underbody, either by the dealer or the factory, so the undercarriage is very rust free as well. It’s a thick coating, almost like bed liner. I purchased the car about a year and a half ago. I have put a lot of new parts on the car to get it operational again, including: New oil pan/gasket All new rear disc brakes, including calipers Brake fluid flushed New rear view mirror New valve cover gaskets Original quadrajet professionally rebuilt by Cliff’s Performance (renowned Quadrajet specialists) New electric choke Transmission fluid changed New outer side window seals New outer door handle- driver’s side New locking gas cap New Fuel tank and sending unit New Fuel pump New steel fuel line from fuel pump to carburetor New rubber Fuel linesNew spark plugs New battery New battery tray New negative terminal quick disconnect on battery The car currently runs and drives, but needs several things done to be street driveable and reliable, including: Needs a new full exhaust system. Original one had to be removed to access the oil pan, and wasn’t worth saving. Needs a rear main seal- leaks heavily, but only while engine is running (doesn't puddle up just sitting)Needs a rear axle pinion seal, I’ve noticed some leakage. Car has an intermittent starting issue. It’s an ignition issue, likely a coil in my opinion. This car is the most rust-free non-restored 2nd generation I have personally ever been around. I have not gotten the documentation from the Pontiac Society yet. Included with the sale are the original t-top bags, the original catalytic converter, and a couple of non-factory manuals. Also, two copies of the original build sheet, which I found while working on the car. They are not completely whole or readable, as mice and moisture got to them over the years. One was found behind the rear seat, the other between the original fuel tank and undercarriage. Payment: The only forms of payment which I will accept are cashier’s checks, or personal checks. Check needs to be next day mailed to me after sale, and received by me within 5 business days. Buyer must allow up to an additional 5 business days for the check to clear at my bank before vehicle can be picked up. The title will be either mailed or placed in the vehicle, at buyer's choice. Shipping: I will not arrange shipping, that is up to the buyer. I will coordinate with the buyer to arrange pickup by a shipping company if necessary, after payment clears at my bank. Buyer must give at least three days advance notice of pickup date and time. Warranty: No warranty, expressed or implied. This is a classic car which will need some work done to be brought fully back to life again, although lots of new parts have been installed. Any parts I have replaced have been done so with OEM type parts, as much as possible. Inspections are welcomed and encouraged.
