Vehicle Detail
So you are looking for an older Porsche Boxster. Excellent choice...let me help. I have owned Porsches most of my life, I simply love the brand. The tally is six 911s and two Boxsters. From that experience, I will offer this opinion to those of you that choose to read this. If money is no object, go out and buy a 911 S Turbo Cabriolet. I do not think anyone could have more fun in an automobile than that. However, since you are looking at this ad, you are likely looking for more of an entry level Porsche. The Porsche Boxster is an excellent choice. The Boxster is an extremely fun car to drive. It handles beautifully...much better than some of my early 911s. The Boxsters come in 2 specific models. They look virtually the same but there is a significant difference in performance. The base model is a nice handling very inexpensive entry level Porsche. But for a better experience of a real Porsche you want the Boxster S. It is still not 911 type power but it comes a lot closer. Since there is only a few thousand dollars difference between the older Boxster and Boxster S and I have owned both, my opinion is look only at the S models. If you are familiar with this Brand/Model you will be familiar with my next comment. It is important to know that from 1997 -2005 Porsche had a bearing design flaw in their engines. The Boxsters were included in the flaw group . This is the famous IMS bearing. The bearing could fail and cause catastrophic failure for the motor. For the most part, these failures have run their course. Porsche estimated the failure rate at about 13%. While that might not seem really high, if I owned one Boxster and mine failed, my failure rate is 100% and I am devastated. And for Porsche, any failure rate such as that is unacceptable. While a bunch of bearings failed, obviously somewhere north of 80% did not. Many others were replaced before they had a chance to fail. The bearing can be replaced/upgraded, but it is not cheap, especially to a $15,000 car. The typical bearing/clutch replacement runs around 3-4 thousand dollars. It is mostly a labor intensive fix so if you are a handy mechanic, it could be repaired for much less than that. All that said, the IMS bearing in this car has "not" been replaced. I had planned to do it when I needed a new clutch. I have checked the oil numerous times for metal shavings and feel comfortable I am in the non failing group but there are very few guarantees in life and it is important for any new Porsche owner to understand the history here. So with that as a background, I still feel Porsche Boxsters are excellent cars and with the price of them so low, they are also excellent deals. When I bought this one, I wanted a low miles Boxster S with as many factory accessories as possible. The sticker under the front hood of all Boxsters of this vintage lists the factory accessories. You can see from the picture included that this car is loaded with a window sticker price of $74,737 (I have the sticker). This could be one of the most expensive Boxsters to come out of the factory in 2002. Check out the partial list of options: 18 inch wheels, hardtop, speedster humps, power seats, heated seats, memory seats, Porsche crests on seats, Wood Grain accents, auto mirror dimmers with rain sensor, headlight washers, cruise, stability management package, premium sound package, cd changer, liptronic headlights, computer on board and more. I wanted all these options/accessories because I wanted My Boxster to be different. There are lots of grey/black/red Boxsters. When I found this Forrest Green model I fell in love with it. In fact it is the only one I have seen in this color. I wanted the hartop to cover all weather conditions and the speedster humps to give the car a unique look. Take a look at the pictures. I am constantly asked if the car is new because of it's unique look. I also decided to upgrade to led taillights (I have originals) and converted the front parking lights to smoke gray. Inside I added an auxiliary cable to the factory sound system to play my IPOD, aluminum pedals and Boxster S floormats. So what you are looking at here is one the the most expensive Boxster S models built in 2002, with reasonably low miles, very well maintained and everything works perfectly. The car is extremely clean and runs beautifully. A fifteen year old car with 40k miles has only been driven 2,600 miles per year. So you can see it has spent most of its life as a garage queen. The car does have a brand new battery and the tires have less than 4,000 miles on them. This car is ready to drive and needs nothing. While I consider it in excellent condition for a 15 year old car, it is not showroom new. The front bumper has normal small stone nicks and there is a small bit of road rash on the edge of a couple of the wheels (appears to possibly be paint peel...very little scraping). It is all original paint, so nothing has been covered up. Leather is just starting to show some wear but you have to look close to see any of it. Carfax report it clean and I am the third real owner. All in all, you can be driving an extremely well optioned and beautifully running Porsche Boxster S for under $17,000. Thanks for reading my ad. Good Luck with your search.
