Vehicle Detail
I need to make room for a new car, so I have to part with my project. If you are looking to get into autocross, this is a cheap and fun way to do so with a little work. The good: CA Smog passed and title in hand New Bridgestone RE760 tires Hard Dog Fabrication Hard Core M2 rollbar that meets SCCA Solo 1, SCCA Time Trials and NASA HPDE safety requirements Timing belt and water pump done at ~82,000 miles Select thing fixed while I have owned the car: ~75,000 Miles (Feb 2013): New clutch master and slave cylinder Replaced both fuel pulsation dampers at the front and end of the fuel rail New injector gaskets New brake pads and rotors New valve cover gasket and CAS cap to stop oil leak Alignment ~81,000 Miles: (Sept 2013): New Bilstein HD shocks Fat Cat motorsports bump stops New shock mount bushings ~82,000 Miles (Oct 2013): Replaced all coolant hoses with new hoses (even that hard to reach one under the intake) New water pump New timing belt New front seals ~82,500 (Jan 2014): New Westco AGM sealed battery (no venting or acid like normal batteries, equivalent to the Panasonic battery that the Miata came from the factory with). ~94,500 (March 2017): New Bridgestone RE760 tires ~95,000 (August 2017): New main relay The Bad: Oil leak from what appears to be the rear main seal. When I acquired the car, the previous owners mechanic royally messed up a simple valve cover job that made quite a mess of the engine. I’ve done my best to clean most of this up, but the very bottom of the engine is still a bit messy. Some dye and elbow grease should help solve the mystery. Top is good for shade and not much else. You can get a new top with rain rail for $380 online. A complete seal kit seems to run $189. Car has been living in the garage, so this wasn't much of an issue in sunny California. Odd wear on rear passenger side brake rotor. I’d just swap in a new caliper back there. Various imperfections on the body, the biggest being the slight dent on the front drivers side fender (previous owner made contact with a pylon in a parking garage, so this was not a high speed impact). Also some cracked paint on the back bumper. Honestly, this was a feature for me. You don’t have to care about hitting a cone on the track or rocks. Car still looks pretty from a distance when waxed. AC doesn't hold a charge for longer than a few months.
