Vehicle Detail
1986 HONDA VF1000R Alright gang… look at this fine piece of Japanese engineering up for auction here. An unmolested 1986 Honda VF1000R. I bought this as a winter/spring project and a surprise overseas military move is forcing sale. The restoration has begun, as you will notice from my pictures, but is not complete and is awaiting someone who will lovingly bring her back to life. What I have done: TANK: The tank represents at an 11/10. No, not a typo, it is truly an 11/10. The tank paint is original and for its whole life it was under a tank bra that covered it 100% so this paint is spotless. The interior was less pretty, so I sent it off to a tank expert in California (“GTL Advantage” tank experts if you want to look at their work) and they completely cleaned it and epoxy lined it so not only will this tank never again need to be lined or cleaned, but it is better than factory new. This alone cost me almost $1000. TIRES: brand-new Michelin bias-ply tires mounted and balanced ($400) FRONT BRAKES: rebuilt with all new gaskets, etc. FRONT FORKS: completely rebuilt with all new rings, gaskets and bushings ($300) EXHAUST PIPES: original pipes completely buffed to original luster and painted I have also cleaned the bike from stem to stern and spent countless hours getting all the grime and gunk out of every nook and cranny I could. The upper fairings I would rate at an 8/10 while the lower fairings, as you might expect, are a bit pocked and dinged from road usage though still come in at a strong 7/10. The seat and its cowling I would rate a much lower 4/10. There is a crack in the fiberglass that the previous owner patched with epoxy and the seat is the original vinyl that needs to be replaced. The chain, obvious from the pix, is a MUST REPLACE item so I won’t even bother rating it. This bike comes with all the parts seen and is almost 100% complete even if you don’t see them mounted on the bike though are represented in the pictures. The only piece I am missing is that oh-so-hard to find pillion seat cowling with bump. I have scoured the internet for hours upon hours looking for one and haven’t been successful. I did find a bloke down in Oz who was selling one but he wanted $750 for it and I guarantee a purchase like that would have landed me in divorce court so I wisely opted out of its purchase. Bike is titled and has 1 key. The bike DOES NOT run. The gent I bought it from was the original owner and he had it parked at the back of his garage since 1997 (he bought it new in 1991-if you know these bikes you know this isn’t a big surprise, they were so expensive off the showroom floor most sat for years as “gawker pieces” until the dealerships dropped the price years later to move them out.) He told me that “it started when parked.” While I can’t verify this I take it on good authority as he is an honorable gentleman and motorcycle enthusiast whom I have done other motorcycle business with and he has, without fail, accurately represented everything else. This is a very cool and reasonably rare old Honda and I wish for all my heart that I could finish the work I started because I had some big plans for this bike (first of those wanting to race it in the Vintage and Antique motorcycle races at NJMP in the 80’s superbike class, wouldn’t that have been cool?!) If you are new to these bikes I encourage you to do the research and see how remarkably awesome they are. The 1985 and 1986 Honda VF1000R were the fruition of Soichiro Honda’s dream and he funneled all his wild ideas, resources, and new and cutting edge technology into this project and the resulting bike is moving poetry. Not to mention, it has been credited with kicking off the massive superbike wars of the 80’s and 90’s! This particular bike has the gold triple-tree and dual headlight endurance bike package. The original air suspension is no longer holding air but there are people out there that are making plug-n-play replacements for them as the air bags are almost impossible to find. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. While I have done my best to describe the bike and photograph it as well, please let me know if there is anything else I can tell you or photograph for you before you bid. Motorcycle is located in Chesapeake, Virginia (a suburb of Norfolk) and is available for viewing by appointment if you are in the area. Thank you for looking at this fine work of art! This is a CASH ONLY and in-person deal only. I will not accept PayPal as payment for anything but the small deposit. Thank you for your understanding!
