Vehicle Detail

Please take the time to read this and watch my youtube video. When I made the video it was very windy so sorry for the lack of voice over wind, but the video is still telling. The second link takes you to over 60 detailed pictures inside, outside and under the car. Thru the 90’s and well into 2000 I spent a lot of time traveling on business. BMW is the only brand of automobile I’ve owned since the early 90’s. My first BMW was an e34 525i which I maintained and drove 250K. I replaced it with a 1998 e39 540i. With the inception of the e39 this 5 series became my favorite and has remained that way to the present. The M5 I have for sale is my second e39 M5 and mostly identical to my first. I bought my first one new in late 2000 and sold it back in 2008 when the economy and housing market tanked. I really missed the M5 and purchased this replacement car from an exotic car dealer in Chicago as the second owner. At that time it had 75K in millage and was very complete with service records, (see pictures). This was a very good M5 then, and remains so now. The first owner was a Doctor who drove this less than 6K a year. The Beast was always garage kept just as it has been while with me. It has never been driven hard. Spirited driving, yes, because that’s what it’s all about… but never abused, and it shows as being a 17 year old car in very nice condition. This car has never been smoked in and the interior is beautiful to this day. Everything works in this car, “This is a good M5” The past service records will speak to its previous history. This car had the 100K/10 year warranty and the 10 years came before the millage. I’m going to speak to its maintenance since I’ve owned it. I’m a skilled mechanic and very meticulous regarding work performed. Up to 100K I did not do much other than drive and change the oil. All the maintenance I’ve done has been preventative with the acceptation of three things all happening around 100K and listed below. Please note I only use OEM or OEM manufacturer for replacement parts. Also, the millage listed below is approximate. Failures: 1.Fuel pump in tank was replaced at 105K along with inline fuel filter. 2.Throttle Positioning Sensors, “TPS” both were replaced at 105K. 3.The AC Compressor went out at 115K which is very uncommon but I replaced with a “New” OEM compressor, new air dryer and seals. The AC works great and it’s very cold. Preventive Maintenance/Worn Parts 1.Spark plugs replaced, 105K 2.Cabin charcoal air filters replaced, 105K 3.OEM BMW M5 floor mats replaced, 105K 4.Tie Rods and steering center link replaced at 115K 5.Front control arms replaced at 115K. The Exotic car company said they replaced the rear ball joints and control arms while in their possession. The front suspension should have been done at the same time but I think they didn’t want to get in that deep, less profit. 6.Sway bar bushings replaced, front and rear 115K 7.Front and rear struts replaced at 115K. 8. Front/Rear rotors and brake pads were replaced, 115K. Slotted/vented rotors were used and low dust pads where installed. I have a spare set of front brake pads that will come with car. 9.Front motor mounts replaced at 120K 10.Bosch Alternator original rebuilt, 120K 11.Battery replaced at 120K 12.Electric Auxiliary engine cooling fan, (pusher fan) 120K. Please note I used a non OEM unit because it’s not nearly as loud as the stock unit which sounds more like a jet taking off whenever it engages. I believe this one cools better too. 13.Water Pump, thermostat, seals and water hoses replaced at 120K 14.New Drive, AC Belt and belt tension pulleys were replaced at 120K. Used Gates Green Line belts as they have a history of being the best. 15.Engine cooling fan and fan blades replaced, 120K 16.Rear tires replaced at 130K, Front tires are not installed but will come with the car. Current front tires are still good. 17.Rebuilt VANOS Solenoids, 130K. The solenoids were still in very good condition and all eight tested correctly, so cleaned the lubrication ports, resealed each one and put them back in service. 18.Replaced Valve Cover Gasket, 130K. On an M5 this is a big time consuming job. It’s not really complicated but there is so much that needs to be removed before you can even get the covers off. I pulled four spark plugs while I was in there to check the burn and they all looked great. I’ll include picture. Things to note… Two working keys are included. Manuals are original and in glove box. BMW flashlight is included and works. There is a hidden Radar detection system built in. There is a switch in the center console for off/on and sensitivity. In the dash picture you can see the indicators just below the water temp gauge. I have stayed away from modifications to this M5. By staying in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines it’s my belief the car will give you far less headaches down the road. The car is super-fast and handling is so tight I just don’t see any need to modify those characteristics “or at least no need for my mode of driving.” There are a few exceptions that made sense to me. An example would be the KONI adjustable struts. I like the ability to soften the ride a bit, but if you want to be more aggressive than it takes all of 30 seconds to change it. Below are a few other non-stock changes I made. 1Rear tail lights were upgraded to smoke lens LED. I still have the originals and they will come with the car. 2Front Xeon headlights are original “but with” LED Angle eyes which are much better looking over factory look. 3I use KN Air cleaners. These have been on the car for more than 50K and not one single issue. There is a lot of controversy that these filters will foul your mass air flow sensors but it has never been my experience. I think the real issue is people have a tendency to over oil the filters and I can see where that might cause problems. 4Oil. I do not use the factory recommended oil. In fact, I would highly recommend against it. I spent a bundle of money running oil tests with both the factory oil and the oil I use now. The oil I currently use came out way above in all metal wear testing by the lab and various millage intervals. The other perks are, it costs less and use less oil between changes. I use 1qt about every 3.5 to 4K. The factory oil uses a qt per 1K, which is silly. The engine in this car is rock solid. There are no oil leaks. Things to know… This car has never been wrecked. All the paint is original. The drivers side passenger door skin was pushed in at some point. Likely it was a parking lot mishap. This was during previous owner so I don’t know the details. The owner had it repaired using a dent pulling no paint service because the paint or inner door were not damaged and this is documented in the receipts. You can still see a bit of a wave when the sun catches it right and you’re looking down the side, but it’s nothing dramatic. I asked BMW about fixing it completely and they thought about $750 because the color, “Jet Black” is the one color that does not need to be blended with the other panels. Another body shop quoted $400 but it never really bothered me enough to do anything about it. While looks are important I spent my time and money on the mechanicals of the car. I’ve included a picture of the door but it does not really show up. The body has some door dings, rock chips, etc. but likely less than you would find on most cars with this millage. Because this car has always been garage kept the rubber around the windows and other locations are not dry rotted and still all original. Wheel rims are original, straight and true. There is a little curb rash, but its minor. There is some damage from a tire machine fighting to get the run flat tires off. The Rims still look OK but they are starting to lose clear coat and getting some discoloration. They have been turning on the car for 17 years and its likely time to get them refinished. There are lots of people in the market who refinish these rims and it’s really not all that expensive. The front bumper cover has a small tear that was repaired. The repair was not professional but it looks ok. and unless you are up close I don’t think you would even notice. I’ve included pictures. The car currently has a set of Continental Extreme Contac on the rear and I have a new set of fronts matching that will come with the car. The current fronts still have plenty of life so why change them. The drivetrain is rock solid. Clutch operates and engages as it should. Each gear shifts smoothly and is well synchronized. The Sport button snaps the throttle response up a level and tightens the steering. The leather in this car is very nice, A+ “in my opinion”, and if you’re familiar with the M5 then you know there is a lot of it. Besides the seats the dash, alcantara headboard/pillars, doors and steering wheel are all leather and it is all in very nice condition. Also, the windows are legal tinted. The windshield has a rock chip that has been there for as long as I’ve owned the car but I was told it was filled and it has never become worse. I average about 18mpg with a good mix of hwy/city driving. Personally I don’t think this is to bad when you take into account I have two 525i’s and both average around 20mpg with the same type of driving. I only use Tier 1 premium gas when filling up. Additional Options that came with this car are cold weather package and folding rear seats. Of course it comes with all the standard M5 options like GPS and 6-disc CD changer. Everything on this car works. There are no engine lights, and no bad codes reset that will come back on you. I’ve truly done my best to describe this car in as much detail as possible, but my disclaimer is as it should be. This is a car with 135K so expect that things will go wrong. I will do whatever is helpful to the buyer for possession. If you live far and want to drive it home I’m less than 10 minutes from the airport and will pick you up. If you want to hire a transport I’ll gladly get the car onto the truck. If you’re local just reach out to me and we can go for a ride.
