And feel free to ask for any photos as I can change them around on that auction. Someone will become the 4rth owner of this very nice once restored 1971 Pontiac Trans Am. I have owned this car since May of 2000. It has been a source of great pleasure for me and my children. As the third owner, I have put some miles on the car, but it still has just less than 93K miles on the original engine and drive train. Originally, this car was delivered to Don Ayres Pontiac, Ft Wayne, IN (I was told the original owner was from Kalamazoo, Michigan and the vehicle has spent its’ life in this state. I have PHS documentation for the vehicle as well as some receipts that I have pertaining to certain work completed. I have no documents from the previous owner with the exception of a copy of the title in the previous owners name(both sides) that I copied and retained for my records. Ownership lineage is: original owner 10/70 until 7/91; second owner 7/91 until 5/00; Me 5/00 until present. The second owner told me the original owner had a run in (rt front passenger side) with a garbage truck and this is why there is a minor wrinkle in the radiator support; nothing more. Likewise he stated he had $35K he put into the first restoration back in the mid 90’s. Other mentions of our conversations may come up below; I have had no contact with him since. Please see my '71 Trans Am auction number 281878815096 for more pictures!! And feel free to ask for any photos as I can change them around on that auction. Some work I have completed: In August of 2000, Just after I bought it I hit a small deer on rt front passenger side; was repaired; I had the doors replaced with “Arizona doors” that I bought from Sonic Motors in Holly Michigan in 2004. This is because I was getting some show trough rust on the bottom seam of the doors. As such, I spared no expense when repairing the vehicle by adding rustfree Arizona doors instead of looking for full panels (or a patch!) that don’t have the same thickness as originals. Currently the drivers side window will need to be repaired as there is a load squeal when you roll it up; plus, there is a slight rubber residue rub on the window – part of the squeak. Most likely, it needs some adjustment. The passenger window works properly, but the handle may have lost a clip. I also had the front spoiler repaired as it was damaged while coming out of the laundry mat in Freemont, MI. back in 2000….It has since been re-damaged, but repairable still by the next owner. Now back to the vehicle as a whole… The vin number is 228871N102943 which means it was one of the first 3000 Pontiac Firebirds off the assembly line in 1971 production year. This vehicle is one of the very earliest Pontiac Firebirds (Trans Ams) with the HO 455 engine as it was built in the 5th week of August 1970 (Plate Code: 08E). Production for the 1970’s didn’t even begin until January of ’70 due to GM Union strikes. Likewise, it is a numbers matching vehicle. The engine is a WC code which maybe a “left over” block from the Judge line at the same Norwood facility from 1970. The block casting number is 483677 & serial# of 21N102943 – what is called “early” 1971 455casting with correct VIN stamp. Make no mistake; the vehicle is a numbers matching block as the vin number appears on the block as well as the original M-22 (Casting# 3925660 – 21N102943 stamped) transmission. The heads are numbers matching “197” coded as they should be. All of the ram air equipment including the manifold heat up tubes, solenoids for the flapper are present and working. ***However. The engine has a knocking rod and is waiting to be rebuilt – it is not seized from sitting. BUT, I will not run the engine again with fears that the rod could be thrown through the block; this I will not risk – read the bottom line from above. The last time I started the car it ran so rough that I shut it down quickly, but it was colder than I like to have it that day. The last time the car was turned over was earlier this year when I removed the coil wire put the battery in and gave it a whirl; the engine went around fine; never started because I took the coil off but then came to a stopping point; so I stopped. I poured some Marvel Mystery oil down the carb to help lube things a bit as I was doing this; knowing it would never be started again prior to engine rebuild. The vehicle had a first restoration in 1996 by the second owner. From my knowledge the car was stripped down and had everything replaced that was needed. The engine however was rebuilt, but was only “re-ringed” and not bored. As such, the engine displacement is still a “true 455.” All of the ram air equipment is present, functional, and runs/operates fine; the Rochester carb was replaced in the mid seventies as it has a 17054907 serial number. This car was ordered w/o AC stock!! It was one of the first Trans Ams to ever have the 455 installed and was purchased to be a stock road racer!! Please see my '71 Trans Am auction number 281878815096 for more pictures!! And feel free to ask for any photos as I can change them around on that auction. The paint is what it is. That is the door areas & sides are a 12 year old paint (see above doors replacement) over of a 20 year paint job at least - who knows some could be original paint as I do not have the complete details or the first restoration; the remainder is a 20 year old paint job. The doors are nice yet. Some minor bumping of paint as pictured around the car from the previous restoration 20 year old paint. After 20 years of paint, I note only one hole showing through the entire car and that is in the splash pan just above the right exhaust pipe. THAT’S IT. What you see is what you get. The under carriage has been completely rust proofed coated from the 70s and has a tar like covering throughout the under carriage; to include inner fenders and rear fenders inside the trunk which segues from black rustproofing on the backside of the fenders of to red primer. It has done its job as the floors are solid both inside the car and under neath; red primer in areas not rust proofed – like the top inner trunk areas; at the top of the fender inside the trunk. Likewise, the trunk/frame rail areas are excellent showing the red primer that segues into rust proofing down the rear fenders; as well as the red primer directly under the trunk coating. The underside frame rails appear very robust as well. The seats are nice yet, but appear to be replacements; not sure as this car was purchased with the very basic ST201 trim; original or not, they have held out well and are still presentable by all means. I believe the frames of the seats are correct by the way the lever knobs look. I took out a back seat and these are indeed the original seat housings with the newer vinyl/cloth covering. The floor boards under the rear seat areas have not been touched as they still have their felt like coverings. Lights, light switches, original keys w/all working locks, emergency brake (& release), tach, odometer, blinkers, brake lights, horn, oil pressure gauge, power steering power brakes, dome light, lighter outlet, all work properly – car may need a windshield wiper motor…and the core of the lighter...clock not working(whats new)….can’t remember…car needs to be vacuumed….. The GM floor mats appear to be stock….and are stamped “GM Pontiac Firebird 70-74” by LAIL….no idea really….. The cars headliner is complete and appears to be original; all kick panels are present and accounted for, the vents work fine…the clutch has good compression……M-22 has no issues going through its’ gears; seat belts are present and original to the best of my knowledge…..an originally installed muffler system (still using the correct muffler clamps – see frame photos) will need to be replaced from the crossover back...its 20 years old. I would go through all of the cars drive train seals as they are 20 years old too….… Once again, everything is pretty much still here and in working order…. I’m sure I’m missing something……so… Please see my '71 Trans Am auction number 281878815096 for more pictures!! And feel free to ask for any photos as I can change them around on that auction.
