Vehicle Detail
A true, early-'80s Superbike survivor, this 1982 GS1100E is in really, really nice condition, showing only a bit of wear and tear for its 33 years and the less-than-15,000 miles on its pristine clocks. I bought this bike in May of 2015 from the original owner in So Cal, who garaged it every day of its life, and added a few extras in the last year: One is a Derale oil cooler. Another is new suspension: new Progressive shocks, and a reworked (and firmer than stock) fork, with springs and valving from Race Tech. There are also brand-new tires, engine guards, and the bike had a recent carb clean and tune from a local reputable shop in San Pedro. The bike starts and runs perfectly, and is really, really fast. It carburets perfectly, and handles well despite its high wet weight of 500-plus pounds thanks for the wide handlebar and fresh suspension and tires. The downsides are what you would expect from a 33-year-old bike. The seat is original, and one of the Vinyl seams close to the tank has begun to split. There is a shallow inch-long dent/depression on the right side of the tank; no paint is broken, and you can only see it if you look just right on an angle. Paint condition is very good, with no other dents or chips. The exhaust is stock, and in good shape except for two rust areas just aft of the footpegs, where moisture collects from the inside. While the sound of the exhaust is quiet and throaty, these are a problem. If the new owner wants the bike to be pristine, a new system (used OE, or aftermarket) will need to be fitted. But since I was just using this bike for a local rider while my GS1000S gets painted and rebuilt for a magazine project, I didn't mind a bit. Why am I selling? Because I just bought a 1983 GPz550, which I will enjoy more than the big GS (I owned one in college). And, I only have so much room in the garage. Other than what I've mentioned, the bike is a solid runner, and a wonderful throwback to a time when big, inline-four superbikes were bare-knuckled and ballsy. With less than 15K on it, it will run forever, so it's a helluva find in this condition. For more information, get me at three ten, eight four nine, eighteen forty five, or at mitch at motoretroillustrated dott comm. The bike is for sale locally, and I don't think it will last long once folks see how solid it is. I will deliver locally if possible, and the title is clear, in my name, and the bike is registered until May of 2016.
