Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a rare 1989 VFR 400. This has always been a favorite bike of mine and I am very sad to see it go, but it is more of a project than I can afford. Here is all I know about the bike. I bought the bike just over 1 month ago from a guy in the Air Force, he had brought he bike over about 15 years ago I guess from Japan to Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Someone on base helped him get it titled in New Mexico (Notice on the title, it states a 1980, I believe they listed this years as it does not have the normal 17 digit VIN number, so it was a way to bypass that). I have NOT transferred the title to my name and do not know if this would be a problem, I make no guarantees on the title, please see the picture of the title and how it shows. The title is signed on the back and no buyer name is listed, it is an open title. Kilometers shows 18042, which comes to about 11,200 miles. Anyway, the guy stored the bike here in Arizona for the last 10 years at his parents house, it was sitting the whole time. He returned for a vacation and decided to sell it, I could not refuse. He indicated the bike ran prior to parking and it needed some work to get back on the road. I decided to give it a try. Here is what I did and what I found out: First off, the engine only spins about 1/4 of a turn and then gets stuck. It takes a little pressure and it will release and spin the other way for about the same and then gets stuck. I have no idea what the issue could be. I removed the spark plugs (one was out) and squirted liquid wrench into the chambers, I changed oil and bought a new filter, I did this prior to trying to turn the bike over. I have no idea what the issue is, please assume you will need to rebuild the engine, always assume worst case. Clicking the starter now just clicks, it would be awesome if it had something to do with that. Brakes - I bought a brake master off of a CBR 900, you will need to get a new resevoir for the front. I did not look at the back brakes yet, I am sure they will need help too. Fairings - the paint is starting to fade, but still looks presentable. These are the original quality Japanese fairing, not the replacement Chinese ones. There is one crack on the front cowl as shown in the pic. There are various scrapes and scratches on the fairings. Gas Tank - It was almost completely drained prior to storing and is not full of rust, it does have a small amount of dried gas (lacquer now) to remove). Tires - Dry rot being any use at all. Chain - Needs replaced. Carbs - Not stuck, he seemed to have drained the gas prior to storing, but I would believe they will need to be cleaned. I bought new carb boots that you get too. Battery - I bought a new Gel battery and it is in it. Lights - The lights work great. Horn - does not work. That is all I know about the bike, if you are local to Arizona, please ask and I will be glad to show the bike to you. If you need it delivered, I do have a trailer if you live nearby. Otherwise, you can keep the bike here for a couple of weeks as you negotiate transportation. Any questions, just ask! Feel free to make an offer, and again if you are close by, please stop by and see it for yourself.
