This model designation of the R107 Mercedes-Benzes were never officially sold in the states, so they are a rare sight on our side of the Atlantic, in fact, only an estimated 45 made it here. Aside from the ultra-cool factor that this car gets to officially share a badge designation with the original SL cars (Gullwing anyone?), there are some really nice distinctive touches on this import. It has the European bumpers that hug the front and rear of the car much better than the U.S.-spec models. These also ditch the black rubber for a more attractive chrome look. In fact, the bumpers join the bodyside brightwork for an attractive wraparound effect. The R107 was the go-to driver for celebrities, dignitaries, and the wealthy because the sleek lines hid a full size interior, and usable trunk that was perfect for any road trip. This one has added value because of the immense care that has been taken to keep the paint, body, and trim near pristine. The burgundy exterior with tan interior is still in vogue today, which means pulling up in this Mercedes is an elegant announcement of your timeless sense of style. Mercedes-Benz always loaded the SLs with plenty of features such as air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power steering, cruise control, tilt wheel, and the original AM/FM/caster stereo. But this one goes even further with desirable options such as the coco floor mats, and genuine leather seats, that are in butter-smooth condition. Despite this being a two top droptop, it shows no signs of sun fading in the interior, which means this has always been under the care of a conscious owner. It again comes with both the removable hardtop, and folding soft top. The 3.0-liter fuel-injected SOHC straight-six under the hood has a bubbly, energetic idle, and it pulls the roadster around with real authority. On the road, an R107 has a chassis that is the perfect balance of elastic comfort, in a tight-handling package. This was topped of with an automatic transmission, and four-wheel disc brakes, for the best all-around control. In total, the Mercedes SL is in a class all of its own.
