Vehicle Detail

1971 Pontiac Firebird Esprit Southern California No Rust Survivor. Cameo White with white (Tuxedo) Interior. High option customer order car. Have PHS documentation and Build Sheet. One family car for decades, they did the one nice quality repaint in the original Cameo White. It was a triple white car, meaning it also originally had a white vinyl top. That was removed at the time of repaint along with the Esprit roof emblems, likely for a sportier look. Car has 112K miles and has been pampered it's life. Esprit package gave Pontiac 350 engine (2V) along with: dual horns, sport mirrors, hidden wipers, shiney trim for: wheel openings, rain gutter, bottom of window and hood, and custom interior with deluxe steering wheel. The custom interior included extra sound deadening, premium door panels, three grab handles, premium comfortweave seat upholstery and color keyed outside door handles, and more. Options this car has include: Air conditioning (works R134 converted), Gauges, Automatic Tranny, Tilt Wheel, AM/FM radio with rear speaker, Power Windows, Tinted Windows, and Honeycomb Rims (14"). Upgrades added: Trans Am front & rear Sway Bars. Gardner dual exhaust with correct crossflow muffler, and Trans Am style tips. Formula Steering Wheel. 15" Honeycombs replaced 14". (The 14" could be available in lieu of 15" if preferred by buyer). Prior owner installed electronic ignition. Items tended to since I have owned last few years: rebuilt carb, tranny service, new BF Goodrich tires last fall before parked. New AC compressor and R134 coolant. Installed new package tray. Replaced sail panels(dyed) (old had sun rotted ends), replaced R map pocked (dyed) (old cracked). Windshield is also new. Master cylinder is new. New door weatherstrips. This is a great car that has never had any rust, period. It has been well cared for, and appears garaged always. Dash is perfect, console is perfect. The door panels are very nice. My plan on interior was to have two small tears in drivers seat repaired. You can not buy repro comfortweave. Faux comfortweave is repro'd. I have cleaned upholstery extensively and a professional cleaning may further benefit. The 71 interior white is actually pearl. Any vinyl dyeing requires proper pearl mix dye. This said as pics may not make patina totally evident. Fresh painted 15" honeycomb to include for spare, needs tire. Jack and wrench included (not pictured). Car is originally a Space Saver Spare. So to correct bolt down the spare, that is style one would need. I preferred a real world road spare, so I never sourced the small one. I got car with no spare for some reason. Additional item of note is that the wide rocker Esprit style trim has dent each side needs replaced or worked and polished possibly. Wide trim is not repro'd, but the narrower Firebird standard and Formula style is readily available and an easy alternative. The drivetrain is unmolested and totally original, with the exception of the added electronic ignition in the factory housing. It runs fine, have driven on a few day trips. Starts flawlessly, runs smooth, no valve noise. The 112K engine appears all original (Cal emission). It has minor rear seal seep. The transmission works perfectly also. The "next step" I would have had fun doing with this car would have been a performance drivetrain. A factory tach is an easy swap in for the clock also. All gauges work. AC works. The paint is overall very nice and a nice quality job with a couple of small chips and marks. There are a few flex cracks at top of rubber nose. It is a very presentable car with very good appearance. It gets compliments regularly when driven. On Jul-24-15 at 15:02:39 PDT, seller added the following information: Added Note 07/24: The carpet appears original and is in very good shape, no tears, and fits very well, nice black, no fade. Headliner is original and I would someday replace due to dry aging and patina. Looks decent has one small 2" tear along seam in back, otherwise tight and intact. Tires were put on last fall and have about 100 miles on them. Radio works but I would replace 44 year old speakers for sound. Also, I was asked about drivability. It drives straight, steers fine, and stops perfectly. Shocks seem fine. In last two weeks was driven locally to two car shows. It has seen summer use only since I have owned and it gets weekend local easy cruising regularly. I have run no ethanol Premium all the time only, not that it needs that octane at all, just better gas IMO for old vehicle use. I was asked what I thought about driving it a couple thousand miles if bought. While I have no reason to believe it would take one here without issues, it just is not my nature to advise people to long road trip a 44 year old car. I have done my best to describe car with good points and points of note also. Any questions, please write as question via auction so all may benefit from Q&A who read. I believe this to be a very good rust free car and a solid basis for whatever path one might take with it, be it stock, modified, clone or drive and enjoy. On Jul-29-15 at 14:37:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Car is available locally for inspection. Car is not for sale locally, auction to run to end. Note that in Trunk picture there is a dark spot on trunk floor. That is dirt and has been cleaned out. Trunk is 100% rust free of any kind, with factory paint intact and nice.On Jul-30-15 at 09:04:27 PDT, seller added the following information: 1971 Esprit production was 20,185. As most were looked at and used as "cars", survivorship reduces this down to (?)...... In the 70-73 series, power window cars appear to be far less common than crank window ones, and also later 70's birds, as this option became more the norm by late 70's. Rust free 70-73 cars are very hard to find. A Trans Am in this never rust condition would be very valuable. Rust repaired 70-73 cars are not uncommon, high end included. The color, the relatively high options, the rust free status, all, in my opinion, make this car worth consideration. If it matters, about me: Good ebay record but not a high seller. I minimize the damages occasionally by selling parts, and also music related items. As my ID indicates with the "bird" in it, that is no accident. I have enjoyed 70-81 birds for personal use since the early 80's. I have owned many, some I should have kept. I had a 70-73 Formula website for a few years. This car has been mine for almost 3 years. Buying a house has kept it in a slower progress mode than usual. My plan was a "gentleman's cruiser" or as they used to call "Grand Touring". I never wanted a resto, so I sought out a rust free car. It was to be a great quality driver for me. The plan was install a 455 I have with medium cam, factory dual snorkel air cleaner, RA exhaust manifolds, retain AC, T400 tranny, add posi 3.23, and have a powerful well mannered fun road car, that looked factory, no aftermarket. I have addressed reliability maintenance items, as I believe the car sat for a couple years before I bought it, and the carb, master cylinder and AC compressor atrophied basically, I believe, for example. I sell it because I have other life plans that have come to forefront, and I have a great 72 bird also. It was a coin toss proverbially as to which one I sell. They are equal in different ways. My GT build plan will go on with 72. This is not a "flip" car or a money making venture, more a "hand off" (we hope) to someone who will have a car they really want. Thanks for reading and interest so far! Re Honeycombs: The trim rings are new when tires put on. They are GM NOS. They sell for 100 ea. Center caps are nice, and original to car (were on the original 14" rims). The 71 year (only) had the plain no arrow style. 72 and up had red arrows. FYI. Rims themselves may be original paint. They backsides are not fresh painted. No dents or structural defects, or rubber coating damage. Fifth rim for spare use to be included is fresh professionally painted front and rear and very nice. Buyer will need to buy tire.
