Vehicle Detail
I am the third owner of this '79 Chevy Scottsdale C10. As I know it, it was purchased brand new by a horse farmer in Loudon County, VA in the summer of '79, and he owned it until June 2013. It was sold to a guy in Baltimore which I who I bought it from in December 2013. When I purchased it, the odo read 10xxx (so 110,000 miles)...it now has 126000 miles on it. I've used it as my daily driver for the past year and a half and it's been a great truck for me, but now that I purchased a '96 GMC, I really need to get this moved. Here's the deal on it: it's got every conceivable heavy duty option that Chevy offered in its half-ton trucks for '79. Heavy duty suspension front and rear, big sway bar, hydroboost brakes, it's all there. the only two things that aren't stock are the motor and the rear end. The rear was originally a 2.76; it's now a 3.73 12-bolt, with a Turbo 400 tranny. The motor was originally a godawful Olds diesel, which was replaced at 60000 miles for a 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass 350 making 310hp from the factory. I've run the numbers on the motor and it may be a 442 engine but I'm not going to say for sure. Whatever it is, it's a great running truck! Very reliable, very smooth running. I have taken it on several 2.5-hour trips without any issues whatsoever! The interior is in fair shape...the seat is great and in very good shape but the dash is cracked up. All lights and gauges work.I've done a lot of work on the truck in the time I've owned it:New tiresNew brake master cylinderNew brake hydro boost New batteryNew alternatorNew oil pumpNew oil pan gasketNew valve cover gasketNew timing chain and timing gearNew beltsNew oil pressure sending unitNew radiator (upgraded to 1986 M1008 CUCV spec)But of course, like most old trucks, it's a little scruffy. It's not rusted to death, but it does have a little rust behind the rear wheel wells, on the bed floor (there's a bed liner installed, though), and on the cab A-pillar. Nothing structural, nothing even remotely serious, but it is there. Additionally, the driver side exhaust has a hole in front of the glasspack, so it pops when you decelerate. My wife is more annoyed by that than I am, but I might as well tell you. Also, the right gas tank is the only one I can get fuel out of. I've replaced the tank switching valve, so it must be the switch itself that is bad. Overall, though, a very good-running truck, and by no means worn out.
