Vehicle Detail

Original owner. Bought it while living in Denver for my 72nd birthday. Drove it some 2,900 miles the first 3 years, then developed a painful right knee problem that kept me from riding the motorcycle, nor hiking too. On April 2014 I had knee surgery that turned into a long recuperation time so I have not been able to ride it since I took it to get inspected in July, 2013, some 10 miles ago.  Recently I tried to use it but the right knee does not permit me to dismount without assistance. Wife, daughter and son got the excuse to ground me.     While at Denver (until May 2013) I took it for service at the main BMW Dealer in Denver the years that I used it.    If I was to keep it the only two items that I fill I would presently need to look into are changing the 8 year old tires for new ones as advised by friends and I would keep an eye on the rust at the gas cap area (see picture). I am not aware of any other items to look into.  If was to to keep on riding it I would take it to a BWM dealer to do my usual yearly service, including change of oil, greasing the chain, etc.     Why did I buy this model?  I read articles by adventurers that ride to places like from USA to the end of Chile, or across Russia and I noted they rode BMW and another brand.  Since I wanted to use my motorcycle in very remote Colorado and Utah off the road locations I chose the model that experienced riders choose to ride to locations where there is no help whatsoever if you have a breakdown, reliability is their topmost consideration,  I followed their choice.  I have seen videos of riders using these type of bikes in river beds, mud channels and over snow. I have ridden it in Interstate highways keeping at their 75 mph limit, feeling the fast response power to avoid car drivers maneuvering. Unfortunately, at my age,  I didn't have the strength, coordination, quick response, nor the experience needed to go on rough off-highway. I did enjoy riding it on gravel country roads.      It has ABS brakes that can be disabled if in terrain where it is advisable to do so.    I installed a larger front wind braker for riding comfort.    A handle heater can be activated.    My usual mileage was 64to 68 mpg per full tank.    I will include two BMW weather protected heavy cloth bags. One goes over the gas tank. It has a see through plastic top pocket that I used for maps.  The second bag is placed at the very end of the rider's seat.
