Vehicle Detail

(relisted with Vin information, Ebay pulled down the ad because their system won't accept the actual VIN. See last picture for Texas title snip). A Ferrari quad cam V12...and a very nice car too. This is a straight, solid, comfortable and nice driving car. Serial 47027, a series II 400i. I bought this car as a keeper but am moving out of the country and cannot take the car with me. This was my 2nd Ferrari, the first was a 308 I had for over 15 years. This car was unlicensed for almost a decade as the previous owner preferred his Rolls, as I bought the car I addressed the maintenance that a 25 year old car needed; Brake caliper seals, stainless steel brake lines all around, new master cylinder; complete checkout of the fuel injection (new pumps, filters, hoses, thermo switch, aux air regulator, air filters, even new injectors). All rubber lines except AC have been replaced. AC is a Sanden rotary type converted to R134 (original is included). Radiator and cooling tank boiled and checked, all coolant lines replaced, heater valves and linkage cleaned and working; some parts around the engine re-plated, other areas painted with epoxy or wrinkle painted as original. Transmission and Engine have all been fine, I know of no major service on these. Some suspension bushings have been replaced. Shocks are good, self-leveling suspension is working fine. Ignition box is a Crane Hi-6. New turn signal lens up front. Sound deadening in the doors, and new door seals. Wheels are 16x8" all around on hub-centric spacers and factory bolts, with modern 245/50 tires everywhere except the spare; I'm amazed how many Ferrari owners are running 15 year old TRX tires. This cost about $2000 to setup, but means that keeping good tires on the car is not expensive. The car runs great on the highway, and in corners still feels stiff enough to know its a Ferrari. Interior is good, with a few scuffs on the leather but no tears, no rips anywhere, all leather is still supple (no cardboard). Seats were re-died years ago and have some scuffs, shelf in the rear is original die with some fading. Carpets and mats are excellent, steering wheel is very good, dash has just average amount of shrink but still looks good. Glass is all original and in good shape, same with the stainless trim. The body is very straight, with no collision damage or rust ever. The rear bumper shows signs of a low-speed bump with a pole, nobody has ever mentioned it to me but it is there. Paint is not original and not fantastic--the gloss is there, but my goal was to put this car into the real world and not worry about dings or dents. This car must have been brought in on an EPA exemption, there is no sign anywhere of Smog gear and there were no catalytic converters hacked onto the original exhaust. The original (6) mufflers under the car have been replaced with a slightly mellower stainless crossover exhaust---I can still enjoy setting off car alarms in the parking garage, but over 2000 RPM the car mellows out and doesn't drone while cruising on the highway. The car is not without faults. The drivers side mirror remote doesn't work, the windshield squirters don't work, the AC needs to be charged up every season with R134, and there is a slow leak around the distributor area. I've lived with the leak, but I'd recommend budgeting time or some money to take care of it. I'm including the few dollars in the distributor gaskets (and have a replacement windshield washer bag/pump), as well including several hundreds of dollars in spares (switches, interior trim parts that were available NOS, etc). Also included is a full and complete tool and tire/jack kit, the original Blaupunkt radio, and manuals and jacket. The car always starts, drives great, and has good power. I always suspected that a bluish gray coupe would seem invisible in the crowd, but I'm constantly amazed how many people remark when they see it---its undisputedly a Ferrari, and in the present world of soap-bubble shapes still stands out. The whole shape is long, low and wide, the sound is an orchestra...and frankly (no matter that driving a stick has been my life), the automatic transmission is really right for this car. There were only about 1300 400i's made, and probably only a couple hundred in the US. You'll probably see 100 Lamborghinis drive by before you see one of these cars. It may be decades, countries may fall before this becomes a $100,000 Ferrari. Until then, here is a car that is easy to work on, easy to get parts for, but also--just may not need all that much attention and is just ready to drive and enjoy. Prices for all Ferraris seem to be inching up, enjoying a Ferrari doesn't have to be expensive and (including the amount of work already done on this car to make it solid) this one can be a defensible choice (!).
