Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1989 Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe. These rare Italian-built coupes were the top of the model range for Volvo during their short production run, of which only about 4,400 were imported to the USA--making these unique cars much rarer than a DeLorean. Please read the entire listing carefully because it's a unique opportunity to make one very nice complete car from two. This Volvo is an excellent running, excellent driving coupe. It goes down the road at freeway speeds all day without a complaint, smooth and quiet. The ride and handling are exceptionally good, especially by Volvo standards. The PRV V6 engine starts right up and runs quietly with lots of smooth power. The transmission shifts through all four speeds crisply and smoothly. It goes down the road straight with no vibration, pulling or erratic handling. The car's mechanicals and its body are the best factors. What lets it down is the completely shabby interior. The front seats are completely shot and need reupholstery. The back seats are in decent shape (one small pea-sized hole in the lower cushion) but could use much moisturizer. The interior is the much more rare two-tone gray/dark gray that made the totally '80's Euro-chic interior stand out. I drive this car to work once a week or so just to keep it running right, but it hasn't been a daily driver in over 15 years. So here's the deal: We bought this car (and it's sister 1990 parts donor car) as a future investment potential car. We still believe it to be a very collectible car (especially at this price), though with my other projects this has just been sitting too long. It needs to go to a good Volvo fan who can get it ready for prime time. This listing is ONLY for the car shown, however the winning bidder will have the option of pitching in $400 more on top of the final bid to get the complete parts car, which is a 1990 780 Bertone Turbo. The parts car is actually in much better shape cosmetically (the reason we picked it), though the interior is tan (email me for pics and details of that car). The parts car has an engine electrical problem (anti theft) and will not start. This V6 coupe has a brand new steering rack and fuel pump. It leaks no oil or fluids and runs cool. This PRV V6 is a later build that does NOT suffer from some of the top end oiling issues that other cars (notably the DeLorean) suffered from without modification. To be clear, this is a clean running, strong V6. It doesn't even burn oil. The front struts and rear Nivomat shocks are in good condition. The car levels itself out correctly after a couple minutes of driving and holds pressure for days afterward. This car has the independent rear suspension which makes it a fantastic interstate ride. The car is completely rust free EXCEPT for the trunk sill at the base of the rear window. The drivers side exhibits a small spot of rust-through. The hood has minor damage near the drivers side headlight, but the winning bidder will have the option of using the hood from the parts car. I have the closeout plate for the front tow hook in the trunk. NOTE: The 15-spoke wheels shown in the photos are not included; the car has a very nice set of aftermarket five-spoke alloy wheels from IPD that are the correct offset. Buyer also has the choice to take the crosslace wheels from the 780 parts car, though those tires are extremely old and cracked. To sum up: buy the car as is and drive it anywhere, or pitch in a little more and get the parts car too. Send me a note and I'll forward you my cell number for details. **7/28 REVISION** Based on some questions I figured I'd better clarify a couple things:A/C is inoperative but complete. Blower fan bearing is making noise but runs.Power door locks are intermittent.Radio is inoperative but complete (it has the slick digital equalizers which work well). I believe the amplifier is bad.Power seats do not slide due to debris wedged in the seat tracks. Seats have the power fold/flip feature which is inoperative.Driver power window inoperative but has power. Passenger window works. All exterior and interior lighting works correctly.Windshield has a crack - but windshield on parts car is excellent (need an auto glass shop with finesse to perform the swap). Thanks for looking, I hope I can send these cars to a good home...the trend I've seen over the past few years is that these cars all end up getting scrapped to keep the few running cars on the road. With luck I'll keep this one on the road too.
