Vehicle Detail
1973 BMW 2002 2.0L, E21 head Weber 32/36 dgv w/ manual choke VIN 2590293 *The 2002 is sold As-Is with No Warranty Vehicle History: The original owner: He drove the car for 20 years, putting 156K miles on it. He decided to turn the car into a track car. He Installed Bilstein racing shocks and Eibach springs. He also installed the Zender rear spoiler, the aftermarket sunroof; all of which is still on the car. He removed the entire metal waist molding and filled all the holes. At a point nearing the end of his 20 year ownership, he had the shock towers repaired professionally (see pictures). He also painted the body Chamonix white from the original Sahara tan. The 2nd owner: He installed the drivetrain from a restored 73 ‘02 totaled rollover, which he had previously acquired. The motor from that car was a 1975 (e21 head) which he had completely rebuilt, bored and balanced, new cam and some bottom end work as well. The transmission and driveshaft were rebuilt. He also installed a new clutch. He installed a brand new ANSA exhaust system; with a 2002Tii exhaust manifold. He also installed new brakes front and rear with cross drilled rotors and new brake hoses. In addition he installed factory rebuilt front brake calipers. All of this is still installed on the car. During My Ownership: I drove the car quite a bit when I had the chance and did your standard up-keep to it. Sadly I’ve been spending more and more time away and the 2002 has been sitting. During being away at school the car had to sit for quite some time and when I went to run it again, I messed with the timing, in doing so my adjustable timing gun broke so I had to use an older one… - Because of this I had to set the timing back to base timing and have not finalized it for final ignition. - The car starts, runs and drives down the street, but due to the gummed up carb, older points and base timing, it doesn’t run like it used to for me. Rear strut tower decay/rust/rot is NOT an issue on this example At ALL. (As seen in the photos) the rear strut towers are close to Factory NEW. -Bilstein racing shocks and Eibach springs, which are old but still supply a good solid ride. -Motor work (done roughly 16 years ago) -e21 head, (valves adjusted only 1.5 years ago) -Clutch grabs well and has good pressure -The engine’s cooling system has recently been flushed. (Car comes with spare water pump) -New thermostat -The only original part of the Engine/drivetrain is the rear Differential. It operates well. (Car does come with a spare Rear differential) -New starter -Weber 32/36 DGV with manual choke and K&N air filter -New plugs, wires and coil. (Car comes with an extra, new set of Bavarian Autosport Wires) -BBS style OE equipment 320is wheels 13x6. (The tires are cracking pretty significantly and should be replaced.) -Cross drilled rotors (a few new pads and shoes come with the sale of the car) -Hella H-4 element style Headlights -'71 '02 short sided bumper -All side marker lights and reflectors were removed and holes were filled to simulate the look of the older 2002 -All glass was replaced 15 year ago -Zender rear spoiler -Aftermarket sunroof -Rear trim and taillight rims painted black -Later year Painted front grills, kidney grills, rear light surrounds and trim -Front valance from Bavarian Autosport. -Original equipment BMW Recaro seats from an ‘83 320is (Fantastic condition) -Great condition black carpeting. -Original horse hair padded rear bench seat (still beautiful) -Solid headliner and visors with no tears -Beautiful ’74 2002 dash with some cracking (photos) -Original Bus style steering wheel with leather cover -Two new rear speakers for musical enjoyment, nothing serious or obnoxious. -The spare tire well has some very minor surface rust in spots but is absolutely solid (as seen in photos) -Straight body. The front directional areas are solid. Rocker panels are solid. Wheel arches are solid. Rear suspension mounts are solid. Wheel wells are solid. Floors are solid, but do have some surface rust, completely structurally sound though. (As seen in photos) -A few years back I spent some hours applying Eastwood’s Rust Encapsulator to the undercarriage of the car (general tlc and a fun way to get to know the car) The BAD or All ISSUES that could be of any concern: -The car does not run as it should; it requires some work to be a proper driver’s car again. You can drive it down the street; maybe even some slower B roads, but that’s about it. To take it auto-crossing etc it needs a tune up/tires. -Out of inspection -As stated above, the timing is currently set at base; and requires adjustment for completion. -The carburetor is gummed up a bit and could use a rebuild or at least a good cleaning. -The points are at least a few years old and should be replaced soon. (new points kit comes with sale) -The oil dip stick sleeve which was originally pressed into the block, has come loose over the years and leaks oil at a Very slow rate. (of no real concern, but should be addressed) -The front left frame rail has had metal welded to strengthen it. Had been done during its auto crossing days. Which fyi does not affect drivability at all. (see photos) -Tired brake pads and shoes -Motor mounts and Tranny mounts are in need of replacement (A new set of mounts comes with the sale of the car) -Tires are cracking and need to be replaced -There is some minor rust which came through on the driver door bottom, and sheet metal imperfections/creases. (see photos) -Both doors have minor sagging and could use adjustment. -Some of the rubber and cloth window seals are getting old. (see photos) -Passenger window has trouble cranking up due to falling out of track occasionally. -There are some dash cracks. (see photos) -Driver’s interior door card has some snapped off fasteners, which are easily replaced (see photos) -Paint is good with some flaws i.e. various chips, clear fade and other minor issues. (see photos) -Bottom of Rear sub-frame has some rust, which does not affect drivability, but should be addressed (see photos) -Slight steering play, but certainly acceptable -Speedo is non-functioning -Mid stream exhaust hanger needs to be replaced -Shifter has movement due to worn linkage collar -Non original sunroof This is not a stock automobile. If you are looking for a 2002 for investment quality, this car is NOT for you. It was put together from parts of various years 2002’s to be driven on the street or track day. The 2nd owner had put only about 3000 miles since the reassembly 14 years ago; and I have put an additional 2500 miles on it. This car would make a great auto crosser or vintage racer, as it is already prepped to do so; just need some work. I personally have an Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology, and currently I’m going back to school for Transportation Design. The previous (2nd owner) has owned/worked on 2002’s since 1974 and had owned 22 of them! $500 non-refundable deposit is required at end of the auction from the serious bidder. Anyone who is serious about purchasing this car should send me an email through Ebay. I will then send you my phone number and we can discuss the car Please bring a trailer, dolly or flatbed. I can ship the car, but it would not be cheap. Thank you and Cheers On Jun-28-14 at 23:37:49 PDT, seller added the following information: To Repeat an Important Note: Please Bring a Trailer, Flatbed or Dolly. Thank you Please, do not get me wrong; This 2002 is a Great example. The car is capable of being quite quick and sharp.. With a clean and tune up it would surprise you. The power curve is fantastic when the second butterfly opens up at WOT and you take off. Even further, if you opt to put on a larger carb ie 38/38 or even a side draft, This ’02 would turn into a little corner cutting rocket.
