Vehicle Detail
1966 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible It has a clear Virginia title in my name. This is a MATCHING NUMBERS car, and I just acquired it from the ORIGINAL OWNER. This car has 68,000 original miles! The original owner is now in his eighties, and had been in the process of refreshing the car over the last five years. He recently decided to let it go, and I picked it up. It is a great candidate for a full restoration, or just put it back together and drive it like the original owner intended to do. All of the important convertible pieces are there, including the correct deck lid, correct ’66 vert mirror, all glass (including the rear window), etc. The door panels (both originals and brand new replacements) are with the car. The carpet is new, and the missing pieces of carpet in the pictures of the rear of the car are here too. The hardwood bow above the rear window and the hardwood tack strip for the rear are with the car (new), but the header bow and the wood for the rear glass are original and no replacements are with the car. Virtually all of the window seals and scrapers come with the car (new from Wolfsburg West). The chrome pieces that hold the rubber scrapers are there too, but not mounted on the car. All glass is there and in good shape, but the driver’s side vent window glass is not attached to the frame. There is a new set of sun visors (black), a new set of rear kick panels, new top seals, an extra bumper blade, and lots of electrical bits and pieces and tune-up parts are with the car as well. It also has five brand-new tires. The spare wheel is missing, however. The back seat bottom section is missing (although new upholstery for that piece is included with the car). The top section of the back seat is included with the car with new upholstery installed. The front seats have new upholstery installed, and the seats function perfectly. The original owner has patched the floorpans in several places. A purist may want to replace the pans, but they feel solid and look decent from above. The underside of the floors looks less attractive. This car will need new convertible support rails. Since the car has been sitting while it was worked on over the last five years, the brakes are in need of adjustment. I have replaced the rear rubber lines, and the car rolls freely, and the brakes do work, but are in need of adjustment. The paint and body look great from about ten feet. As you get closer, you will notice a few areas that the original owner did not address as well as he could have before he painted it, and some areas that may have been scratched after he did his paint work. There are a few bumps and scratches (no huge dents or anything). The doors have a couple little waves in them near the bottom. The front apron is not perfect. It looks like the car may have been lightly tapped on the driver’s side front at some point in its life, but nothing serious. I say that because I found a couple of small ripples on the inside of the trunk just to the inside of the driver’s front fender. Again, nothing terrible at all. I don’t see any other indications of accident damage. The upper bumper supports on the rear bumper are not installed, but I just happen to have an extra brand new set that I ordered for my other ‘vert that I will include with this one if desired. This car could totally be put together and driven as-is and be very respectable. The original owner added some, um, interesting trim to the deck lid, and also added a VW logo there. Those can easily be removed if desired. I have gotten the engine running, and it seems to run fine. I have not done extensive testing, however, because the carburetor is leaking a bit of fuel at times. The carburetor will likely need a rebuild, but the engine itself runs fine. I did drive it around the block a time or two (with a fire extinguisher ready), and the engine was smooth and the transmission worked well. The fuel tank and lines will likely need to be flushed out. I used an external tank when I ran the car. I really like this car, but I am moving soon, and I won't have space to keep this one. If I didn’t already have a nice ’67, I would probably keep it! Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule an appointment to come see the car.
