Vehicle Detail
1967 Jeep Gladiator. Why Jeep doesn't use the Gladiator nameplate anymore, I don't know. I mean really, is there a more badass name for a truck than that? We call this one Max, short for Maximus. I bought this on a whim when I was in New Jersey about a year ago. I was at an auction for a GM dealership that closed down due to the owner's death, and was there to buy their remaining parts inventory. They also had this truck for sale, which belonged to the owner before he passed away. If you look at the photos, you will see that I have the original invoice from 1967. Anyway, I bought it because my daughter was close to driving age, and I thought this would be a good car for her. Then I had her drive it. This truck is not for the faint of heart. It requires some skill to drive. She doesn't possess those skills. So I abandoned that idea, and bought her a really boring import with automatic transmission. But I love to drive it. It is a definite head turner. You just don't see these around anymore. The interior is in amazing condition for a truck of this age. The doors shut like it came off the lot yesterday. Windows roll up and down beautifully. Mirrors, door handles, seat belts, etc, are all original, and work great. After putting a few hundred miles on it in New Jersey before bringing it back to California (on a truck), I learned it has a few items that need to be fixed. Here's a list: -speedometer doesn't work -gas gauge doesn't work -left flasher indicator (interior) doesn't work. Exterior flashers works fine though. -has a slow oil leak It is really fun to drive a column shift. If you haven't done it before, I highly recommend. The transmission takes a little getting used to. For example, it does not have a "synchro", which basically means that when you try shifting into first gear on the go, it grinds sometimes. Also, you have to understand the way it works when shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. Once you get used to it, it is a piece of cake. I had the e-brake repaired after I bought it, and the guy who repaired it is a transmission specialist. He drove it with me, and said the engine and transmission are in good shape, and would last a long time provided the driver knows how to treat the truck. The body condition is one of the things I like best about the truck. Great patina. Yes there is some rust, and the tailgate is slightly bent, but who is perfect at 46 years old? I'm 44, and wish I looked that good. The carburetor is old school, and using the choke is required when starting cold. That's about it. I hate to part with it, but don't have time for a project car, and can't garage it. So grab it while you can. You won't see another one like this, ever!
