Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1973 Datsun 510 2 door sedan. 1973 was the last year for the iconic Datsun PL510. Please read the entire description before bidding or asking questions. This Rare Classic 510 has had its engine and transmission swapped out with a sweet SR20DE two liter, fuel injected 4 cylinder engine. It also has the SR20 5 speed transmission, wiring harness and ECU. The JDM drivetrain was sourced from a Japanese Engine Importer. The car starts up and the engine runs strong. This car was recently revived after sitting for 4 years. It was from Georgia and made its way to Virginia in 2010. The guy that bought it drove it from GA to VA. He didn't use the car much and then the car stopped running due to an electrical issue and he parked it. I recently saved the car from its long term slumber and got it going again. I had plans to restore it but I have several other 510s and just don't have time for another project. Please keep in mind that this car is a project that needs completion. It starts and runs but you will not be driving it home when you come get it. It will need to be transported. Body The body is fairly straight but it does have some dings, dents and rust in the usual 510 rust prone areas. Both front floor boards are rusty and will need to be replaced. There are vendors that make repair panels for the car. The rear floors are mostly solid but there are a couple spots where the floor meets the rear seat upright that will need to be patched. The area under the back seat is solid. The bottoms of the front fenders have the usual rust spots along with the lower rear quarter panel sections. The passenger rocker panel will need repair or replacement. The trunk is pretty solid. The hood was damaged before I got it and I am including a good replacement hood with the car. Thankfully, there are now OEM style panels available for the 510. Futofab is a great 510 vendor. Paint The car was painted with primer by the previous owner over the original Butterscotch color. There is some bondo here and there. The right rear lower quarter panel had a non professional repair that has bondo and will require repair. Drivetrain The engine starts fine and sounds good and seems to run strong. There is a small water leak in the radiator. The transmission and clutch seem to be good but I have only driven it around the yard. Suspension The car has the stock 510 suspension. It will likely need updating. The tires seem to rub the fenders when at near full lock position. Brakes The car has the stock 510 brakes and they need attention. Pedal goes to the floor so they will need to be looked at. Included with the car is a set of Datsun 280ZX front struts/brakes which is a nice easy upgrade for the 510. Wheels/Tires The car has a nice set of 14" Konig Rewind Wheels with fairly new tires. The Lugnuts are locking lugs. Interior The interior is complete and very nice. The door panels are uncut and in good shape. The dash and gauges are nice but the dashpad has a few cracks. The headliner looks to be original and is solid but there are a few tears and stains. The seats are from a BMW and they are leather and look nice. The back seat will need some adjustments to get it to fit securely. The seats fit well and really makes the car comfy. There are Sparco Harnesses in the front and a matching Sparco Steering wheel. The carpet is fairly new and looks nice too. The glove box door has a broken hinge but a replacement glove box is included. The passenger door does not open from the outside. Something must have come loose in the door. Electrical The wiring is good but it was not done professionally and could really use some cleaning up. see pics. There is a switch on the dash that was added for the cooling fan and the ECU was placed under the glove box and the wires are tucked up nicely. Overall, this is a complete running 510 project that will be a great car and just needs someone that is looking for a project. See the You Tube video of the car starting and running. Search " 73 SR20DE 510 Running " on youtube for video I have been into 510s for over 30 years and I am well known in the Datsun Community.I have done my best to describe this car. In answers to questions I have received, The Car runs and drives. It starts right up and idles fine. It will not take much to get it back on the road. I would think that once the brakes are dealt with, it would be drive-able. The previous owner drove the car from Georgia to Virginia back in 2010. I have only driven it in my yard in first gear and reverse. The clutch feels good and properly engages and disengages. It goes through all of the gears fine and the shifter feels nice and tight. All of the Glass is in good shape. The windows had been tinted in the past so there is residual glue in some areas that should be cleaned up. This car has the rare rear defroster glass that only came on the 73 model in the USA. The windows go up and down properly. The doors line up nicely and open and close properly. The passenger door handle from the outside does not work but it opens from the inside. The trunk lid fits nicely. The tail lights look good and the tail light panel is straight and solid. The Rear Differential is likely a limited slip unit (LSD). I tested it when on jack stands and both wheels turn forward when you turn one or the other or turn the driveshaft. The car does not come with bumpers. Futofab will be offering brand new bumpers this summer. Or used bumpers can be sourced. The Car is located in Silver Spring, Maryland in the Suburbs of Washington, DC (30 minutes north of DC) I prefer not to disclose the reserve on this car. The reserve is well under the Buy it Now price. I feel that the car is priced fairly for the current market. There is an Annual East Coast Datsun 510 Meet (SPEC510) at Summit Point Raceway in Charles Town, WV. This year is the 18th year. The dates this year are May 16-18, 2014. I have been asked several times about the reserve. I prefer not to disclose my reserve price. I will say this. 510's on the east coast are becoming very hard to find. Especially running cars with cool engine swaps. 510s are still plentiful on the west coast and prices have been climbing. Basketcase 2 door 510s are now bringing $2500 out west and those usually have been totally disassembled. To bring a car from the west coast will cost on average $1000. So do the math and add up the car listed here on the east coast. $2500 - Complete Rolling Shell with complete interior$1800 - JDM SR20DE engine, trans, ECU and wiring harness$ 500 - Nice wheel and tire package$ 250 - 280ZX strut/brake upgrade???? - Labor to do engine swap$5050 - Total without the labor for the swap My Buy it now is now less then that. I just lowered the reserve and the buy it now on this car. Someone is going to get a sweet deal and a great car. Don't miss out. Auction ends Sunday night.
