Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE 1946 Ford Rat Rod This rat rod is a real Frankenstein hot rod made from the bits and pieces of six different vehicles. The truck is surely to scare little kids and cause old lady’s to quake in their boots at its passing. It looks cool, sounds cool, and draws a crowd EVERYWHERE. Having been the first of a series of father/son projects, it is littered with crappy fabrication, dents of various sizes, and untreated rust in a few places, but all in all it runs and drives well. The cab started as a 1946 Ford ½ ton pickup and has since seen extensive modifications over its 68 year life. Its most notable feature is the 4” chop courtesy of a Utah chop shop some years ago, along with a custom sunroof now covered with a removable leather eye patch. The cab was also sectioned 3” in the middle to give it a stout stance and the door skins were cut in two and the bottoms welded in place. The doors are suicide and hung with old barn door hinges that creek like any old bag of bones this age would when moving. The hood and front fenders are set up for a tilt front end. A 47’ ford grille and lights have been grafted in place of the 46’ grille. The bed is from an early 50’s international farm truck. The drivetrain is from a 67’ Pontiac Bonneville, including a Pontiac 400 engine that breathes through a four-4 barrel carb setup. Exhaust is routed through the front fenders down low like a gasser and has 10” glass packs for a good sound that should keeps the cops off your back. Turbo 400 transmission is controlled by a long-neck Lokar shifter, but does have a minor temper so included is a spare turbo 400 trans. The rear end is a limited slip with pretty tall gears (don’t know exact ratio). The entire rear axle was reworked to make room for a 52’ Cadillac leaf spring set-up that was welded in place and the old driveshaft was pitched like a javelin to make room for a shortened spine from a 63’ Mercury. The massive gas tank is from a bulldozer and holds 30 gallons of the fuel of choice. The front suspension is a Valarie clip with torsion bars for adjustments to fit the drivers taste. The front end includes new balljoints, tie-rods, bushings, etc. The entire brake system was redone with disc brakes up front and drum in the rear, including a new master cylinder and booster. Inside features include a set of custom built sheet metal seats and dash made from scrap pieces of the truck’s International bed. In true rat rod fashion the seat belts are hooked to old piston rods. The dash includes vintage gauges for aesthetics which are complimented by new auxiliary gauges. The steering wheel is custom fabrication made from an old model T steering wheel center and an outer wheel ring welded on. The entire electrical system comes complimentary from a Keep It Clean wiring harness that is accentuated by old lights and signal indicators. The rubber meets the road on a set of Coker white walls that cover a set of weathered steelie wheels. The vehicle is littered with various touches of lettering, pin striping and caricatures from “Shaky” The Crazy Painter and I am sure there might be more if the lucky buyer twists our arm. This one of a kind will get you up and down the road, but if you are looking for a shiny trailer queen you had better try another search title.Seller reserves the right to end auction early as it is for sale locally as well. On Mar-30-14 at 21:40:58 PDT, seller added the following information: Additional description items added 3/30/14: We have had quite the response over the last couple of days and even some calls so let me answer some of the general questions:First of all the truck is a RAT ROD in the literal sense as it looks, drives, acts, and feels like a car that is rough around the edges and could use some touching up. It DOES have a valid title. It was issued by the State of Idaho. As shown in the pictures, the front hood/fenders is all one piece. It sits on a welded bracket at the bottom front, has locating pins at the fenders, and is secured by a bolt at the top. Someone should be able to figure out a cool tilt setup. We had the transmission looked at. We were told it sounds like the tranny pump needs replaced. This confirms our suspicion that we ran the torque converter into the pump the last time we had the engine out. It still drives and I will post a video by Tuesday of it driving down the road if it ever stops raining. Regarding the seats, they were made out of pieces from the old bed. We have modified them a couple of times and with a folded mexican blanket they were just fine. The longest we ever drove the truck was about 75 miles. The frame is from the original 46' Ford. Most of it is boxed. There is only as small C-notch over the back axle. We did not want it to high so that it stuck into the bed. Someone may want to change it a bit so the ride is not as rough over bumps. The front end is not on bags. It is just dang low. We have driven it all over town and we have to be careful around speed bumps and driveway entrances. The lowest part of the car is at the back of the front fenders by the running board. It is about 2.5 inches. It does have a 6 volt horn that is wired but not converted to 12v. Dash: The dash has the turn signal switch left of the steering wheel. The column is tilt of of some GM car I believe. The is a key, switch starter, lights, and gauges. Items that might need attention: (1) Brakes. Although they work and stop good, someone smarter than me needs to figure out the correct setting of the pedal and the proportioning valve, (2) Timing - I have never timed the engine with a gun. Just by ear while moving the HEI distributor. I am sure this added to the reason it runs hot, although a better radiator might help as well. (3) Dome Light - Wired with a cool old light. May need some change as it frequently burns out. On Apr-01-14 at 22:35:32 PDT, seller added the following information: I was able to upload some video of the truck idling in the driveway and also rollin down the road. This can be found on YouTube by typing Boise Rat Rod 2014 in the search. I think I have done a good job describing this as a rat rod. It is noisy, squeaks, rattles, and is bumpy. The tranny needs work as the pump is shot, but it still drives. I do have a spare tranny for the winning bidder. The engine is an older Pontiac 400 and has never been rebuilt. It leaks a little oil probably from the mains and valve covers. It also has some water leaks this year probably from corroded freeze plugs (I replaced two corroded ones a while back) and also from sitting for the past 18 months and the hoses might need tightening/replacing.
