Vehicle Detail
1976 CB400F SS with 700.6 Original miles. A rare example with provenance worthy of any world class collection and/or museum. What's more is this the most desirable "Yellow" model variant. This motorcycle was purchased new on April 16, 1977 then sold on July 2, 1980 at 693 miles to the 2nd owner. The 3rd owner purchased the motorcycle on August 5th, 1994 at 699.8 miles. Upon taking delivery of this machine and without hesitation, the 3rd owner proceeded to Mr. Honda, a local Honda dealer (receipts included), where he authorized this dealer to replace any chrome component parts that showed even the slightest signs of oxidation with NOS genuine Honda parts. These parts include the head pipes, exhaust gaskets, exhaust flanges and muffler, chain guard, tachometer cable guide, horn assembly, kick start lever, hand levers, wheels, spokes and spoke nipples. New tires (Dunlop K81 Roadmaster TT100's) were installed as well. Following this work the dealer's mechanic rode the motorcycle less than one mile (a shakedown ride) then decommissioned it on March 18, 1995 at 700.5 miles. Today, at 700.6 miles, this motorcycle continues to remain out of service therefore, the NOS parts which were installed in 1995 have been exposed to less than one mile of actual service! The engine turns over with what feels like excellent compression. The internal surface of the fuel tank is rust free and has NOT been primed or coated with any foreign substance. The exterior surface of the fuel tank is dent and scratch free but there are two small (1.5mm dia.) touch-up spots on the upper right side of the tank as can be seen in one of the photographs. Note, the original non-locking type filler cap is present. This is rare as most of you know following the release of the 1976 model year Honda issued a recall to replace this filler cap with a locking-type cap. In 1977 the fuel tank was completely redesigned to incorporate a locking access cover and a threaded fuel cap. As with the fuel tank, the paint on the side covers is excellent and the covers have no cracks or broken-off tabs. There is however, a shallow scratch on the left side cover as shown in one of the photographs that may be buffed-out. The exhaust system, both head pipes and muffler are in excellent condition with no visible oxidation or damage. Take a close look at the switch cubes (hand controls) and gauges, they are original with absolutely no fading from UV rays. The rubber boots covering the gear shift link joints remain intact and pliable. All safety decals are present and very clean with no fading. The original seat is also in excellent condition, i.e. pliable with no stretch marks, blemishes, rips, cuts or tears and no oxidation on the chrome seat pan rivets or seat strap buckles. Note, the rear shocks shown in the photographs have been replaced with the original, genuine Honda shocks. When decommissioning this motorcycle, the Honda dealer drained fuel tank, carburetors and front brake fluid. The engine oil and filter were also removed and replaced and the battery removed. I see no reason why this motorcycle could not be returned to service if you so desire however if this is your intent then please consult with your local Honda dealer in advance of placing a bid so that you clearly understand what service work and/or labor content is required in doing so. I am confident this is one of, if not, the finest example of a Yellow 1976 CB400F SS you may ever have the opportunity to acquire. I hope this motorcycle is eventually displayed in a public venue for all 'like-minded' enthusiasts (and non-enthusiasts) to enjoy - not hidden away in my home office. Included is a "clean and clear" North Carolina State title in my name along with an Original Key, Honda Owner's Manual, Factory Tool Kit, Honda Warranty Policy & Service Record, Warranty Registration Card (orig. warranty was 6,000 miles or 6 months) and Distributor's Limited Warranty Certificate. The reserve price is based on provenance, rarity and condition. Offers may be considered however once the reserve price is met the auction shall run in it's entirety.
