Vehicle Detail

1999 Ex California Highway Patrol bike. 94,000 miles. Runs and shifts great. New clutch within 10k. Transmission is the desirable M97. It had a bent 2nd gear shift fork and popped out of second when I bought it 5 years ago. I shifted first to third and drove it all over the east coast with 0 problems. The splines on this bike can be problematic if not properly lubed within proper mileage intervals so I recently bit the bullet and removed the tranny for repair and spline lube. The shifting roll 2nd gear groove was bent along with the second gear shift fork. These Getrag transmissions are reliable but have shown some weaknesses and the shift forks have proven problematic due to user error. Look up "r1100 shift preloading" for more info! The second gear shift dogs were worn due to the inaccurate location of the gear by the bent fork. I bought a known good low mileage transmission from a BMW mechanic and used these parts to replace the shifting roll, 2nd gear shift fork, and the second gear and matching idler gear which both exhibited perfectly formed shift dogs (the part that wears most often). I checked all sealed bearings and ended up replacing the back output shaft bearing which had a small "hitch" while rolling. Everything else in the transmission looked GREAT, including the sometimes troublesome front input bearing... which is pretty impressive for a 94k tranny. The M97 is far more reliable than earlier iterations and I believe that this one is ready to go another 94k. Trans seals for output and shift shafts were replaced while I had it out. No wear on any transmission, driveshaft or final drive splines... this bike was clearly well serviced over its public service life. I re-lubed all splines with Honda Moly 60%. Valve adjustment service recently completed. All new fluids: Redline shockproof in trans, Mobil 1 in engine, Dot 4 brake fluid, Castrol Synthetic in final drive. Stainless steel fastener kit for fairing. New sealed AGM battery just installed. Heated grips, SS throttle lock, electric adjusting windshield, locking sidestand, sturdy centerstand, chrome crash bars front and rear, BMW city luggage cases. She looks good but has the usual wear and light scratching here and there. Crash bars had some pitting and scratching here and there which I addressed with a rust converter and small amount of chrome paint where needed. They look better and more importantly are protected from corrosion. Right mirror cracked, overlaid with a wide angle mirror. Rear view not obstructed. Rear tire in good shape. Front tire is worn and will need replacing soon. Cleaned the bike from top to bottom when I had the transmission out. She is fully serviced and ready to eat up the miles on the highway. 45-50 MPG. I have enjoyed owning her but have too many vehicles and need to fund a large sailboat restoration project $$! I can deliver within 150 miles or so for a small fee.
