Smog passed recently. Car with current family since 2001 -- purchased this from Fantasy Junction in Emeryville. The Elan M100 has made its mark in history as arguably the finest handling front wheel drive car ever. It's a bit of anomaly of course. Light weight car designed by Peter Stevens (also designed McLaren F-1 & Jaguar XJR150). Weighs 2200 lbs vs. BMW M3 convertible 4000. One of the most rigid chassis of any production car ever made. Handling is outstanding. Problems: Repairs needed are common to M100 and can be done by you. Parts are inexpensive and available at Dave Bean Engineering. There is advice and specific forum online -- these cars have a cult following and especially here in the bay area. Passenger side window -- after many repairs still needs regulator repair, detailed at Lotus Elan Central or Google search Driver's side headlamp motor works intermittently -- needs repair -- parts are inexpensive, repair detailed at Lotus Elan Central One rear back/up bulb SIR light on -- needs re-set Driver window trim (outer) needs replacement Paint generally good but small areas of clear coat are bare It is a very nice and easy driver for California. Of course it is great fun in the summer with the top down but with the newly installed convertible top you will not have to worry in the winter. I am making all efforts to be very upfront with all buyers. This car is definitely not a basket case but needs work to be done to get it up to top level. If I were to keep it, I would start with a major service on the motor and replace all the needed rubber (Tires are old -circa 2000 date codes, any tubes that need replacement, Inspect CV's, etc.). There is an oil leak but it is not dumping out, just a few drops - this is likely the cam angle sensor. The brake discs need to be turned on a lathe. The passenger window motor / movement needs to be rebuilt. The passenger door card is off but I have all parts (pictured). The interior is actually pretty good and the dash is clean with no cracks. I would re-dye the seats. The windshield rubber is in fairly good shape. All this being said, Lotus was never known for fit and finish. I do have a short file of paperwork to share and pass along with the car. It is great car to drive. I took it up on Skyline Blvd. a couple months ago and it really goes. The engine is good, it drives very smooth. It just needs to be brought back up to date on maintenance and a couple of issues need to be worked out. it is in original condition with no engine, interior or body modifications. It is at this point, its getting to be a vintage car! I inherited the car and have literally changed the battery and title and smogged it - it passed on the first attempt with flying colors.
